Middlesbrough defender Alfie Jones put in a ‘colossal’ performance against Charlton Athletic on Tuesday evening, say reporter Craig Johns.
Middlesbrough won 2-1 against the Addicks at The Valley in their last match Championship outing. Riley McGree and Morgan Whittaker scored Boro’s goals in London.
Kim Hellberg’s team is in second place after twenty games. They are five points behind Coventry City.
Journalist Johns was impressed by Jones’ performance against Charlton Athletic and has given his verdict, according to a report by TeesideLive: “Colossal performance at the back. Charlton was a tough test with defensive options as they are, but Jones put his body in the way and made some crucial tackles, blocks and last-ditch headers.”
The 28-year-old Jones was signed by Middlesbrough from fellow second division club Hull City in the summer and he wrote a four-year contract at Riverside Stadium, running until June 2029. Since then he has made a positive impression.
The centre-back, a Canadian international with one cap to his name, has made 18 appearances in all competitions this season, 17 of them in the league. He scored one goal from the back at Millwall in August.
Middlesbrough defender Alfie Jones catches the eye
Middlesbrough signed Jones in the last transfer window to strengthen their defensive department. Boro brought him in to add more competition and depth to their squad.
The Bristol native has adapted well to life in his new environment. He started his career at Southampton and rose through the academy.
Jones was a regular for the Saints at various youth levels but never played for their first team. Instead, he was loaned out to St Mirren and Gillingham to gain some experience as a youngster.
Hull City called upon his services on a permanent basis in 2020 and he helped the Tigers win the League One title in his first year under their former head coach Grant McCann. He played 191 games during his time in East Yorkshire before his former team gave him the green light to head out the exit door to Middlesbrough.

What next for Middlesbrough and Alfie Jones?
Middlesbrough’s decision to secure Jones’ signature in July has worked out well for him. He fits nicely into Boro’s starting XI.
Hellberg’s men will be in a confident mood after their win over Charlton Athletic. Their new manager has won all three of his opening games.
He was picked as their replacement for Rob Edwards last month. The Swede left his position at Hammarby IF in the Allsvenskan to take up a new challenge in England.
Middlesbrough are back in action this weekend as they look to maintain the momentum and close the gap on Coventry City above them. They face a potentially tricky home game against QPR.
