Covington is coming off a loss to Joaquin Buckley over a year ago and hasn’t fought since. However, there isn’t much news on his next fight, but he said he will move up to middleweight next.
With Covington switching divisions, he has his eyes on former champions Israel Adesanya and Sean Strickland for his first fight.
“I think I’m intrigued by someone like Israel Adesanya, a former champion like me, someone who generates hype, has a following, has a platform and a brand,” Covington said. Submission radio. “So I think the fight with Izzy makes a lot more sense than anything else, and it’s someone I really don’t like.
“He’s talked about me a lot in the past, so let’s see if he can actually back up that talk. I would love that (Sean Strickland) fight. He’s a cardio kickboxer. I’d beat him anywhere. You see what Dricus (Du Plessis) did to him. I’d do the same.”
While Covington wants Adesanya or Strickland next, it’s uncertain whether he’ll get either one.
Colby Covington expects to do well at middleweight
With Covington moving up to middleweight, he is confident he will do well in his new division.
Covington believes he can make an immediate impact and that’s why he wants a big name in his debut fight.
“I know I can do well at middleweight,” Covington said. “Those guys are a lot slower. They might be bigger, they might hit harder, but they’re a lot slower. I’m just as strong as them. I’m getting bigger and stronger these days.”
“I feel like there are a lot more tempting matchups in the middleweight division than there are in the welterweight division right now. There just aren’t any stars. It’s sad that there aren’t any stars in the welterweight division, so I guess I have to move up to middleweight to get some big fights.”
Covington is 17-5 as a pro and is coming off a TKO loss to Buckley.
