Miami – that much is clear in the confused pitching – comparison of the Mets: Clay Holmes is planned to start the season on the line on Saturday.
Holmes and Sean Manaea are the two options that Carlos Mendoza considered for Game No. 161.
Both threw a collection in relief on Wednesday, and the assessment of the manager was that Holmes recovered faster from that outing.
“Clay felt a lot better,” Mendoza said before the Mets 6-2 lost to the Marlins. “Sean feels good today, but I just thought based on how they felt [Thursday] To follow this route. “
The Mets fell behind Cincinnati for the third and final wildcard of the NL based on the Tiebreaker.
Also in the mix was Arizona, who started the day two games behind and played a late game in San Diego.
If the Mets are still alive on Sunday, Mendoza’s choices will probably be Manaea and David Peterson, who both struggled.
But Mendoza also had not the option of using one or both in advance in relief if necessary.
Holmes has been the most consistent starter of the team, except Nolan McLean, who emerged as the ACE of the rotation about only eight Major League -Starts.
But the last two performances by Holmes have been in relief, where he was scorned in a start of Manaaea last Sunday before he threw a collection on Wednesday after Jonah Tong was eliminated early.
Holmes has a lot of experience in games with busy packaged from his four seasons pitching for the Yankees-including three postseason performances.
“You feel the intensity, you feel the excitement,” said Holmes. “You have just learned to know that you are playing for something – there is really no better feeling in the world. The most important thing is today, there is no morning, and what can we do today to come to the end of this game? I think that is what Playoff makes baseball and in the mix here is what makes it so special because it brings that pure competition of the game.”
Holmes, who has thrown more than 159 ²/₃ innings to a 3.66 ERA – by far a career high after the transition from Reliever to Starter this season – started for the last September when he allowed two runs earned against the Padres, in a competition he was by Manaaa.
The Lefty Manaaea has deleted in his last two performances after he has allowed only one earned run over five innings in the relief action against the Padres.
Manaea, who owns an ERA of 5.80 this season this season, was asked about the difficulty of these last games, given the way in which the starting pitchers of the Mets have performed behind him.
“It will definitely be a challenge and I think that is a kind of where we have been in recent months,” said Manaea. “At the moment it is just what is needed. I think everyone feels a bit.”
Peterson has imploded in three of his last five starts, so that at least six points earned in each can be requested, but may be asked to start on Sunday with everything at stake.
