Tauson will be confronted with four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the semi-final, after the Japanese star had first reached the Canadian open in her career.
Osaka defeated the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-2 6-2 in the quarterfinals to reach her first WTA 1000 semi-final since 2022.
Svitolina said she got the death threats after her defeat and attributed the “shameful” behavior to those who had been gambling at the game.
“To all gamblers: I am a mother before I am an athlete,” wrote the 30-year-old in an Instagram story in which she confirmed screenshots of the messages.
“The way you talk to women – to mothers – is embarrassing. If you saw mothers your messages, they would be disgusting.”
Osaka needed just over an hour to secure the victory over Svitolina of the 10th placed Svitolina.
The former Number One in the world has linked not -not -ed mistakes to break twice before she held her nerve to serve after Svitolina had a break back.
After she had converted two more breakpoints to seal the victory in Montreal, Osaka said: “I think I just have a lot of fun playing here and I am really happy to be here.
“She’s [Tauson] Really difficult. I played her in Auckland this year and I had to stop halfway because I was injured. So I am really excited that I am healthy and I hope it is a good match for everyone who comes and looks. “
In the men’s tournament in Toronto, the American second seed Taylor Fritz went to the Semis with a 6-3 7-6 (4) victory over the Russian Sixth Seed Andrey Rublev.
Next to Fritz is the countryman and fourth seed Ben Shelton, who defeated the Australian ninth seed Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-3 to reach his first career-masters 1000 semi-final.
