Andrew Abbott ran into problems in the first inning when he allowed the first two batters to reach through a double and a single, but limited the damage to just one run on a sacrificial battle. Abbott allowed basic runners in every inning he threw tonight. He went 4.2 innings and allowed eight hits on three points, including a two-run home run to Thomas Saggese in the third inning. He hit seven cardinal batters while he didn’t walk.
In the meantime, Cardinals pitcher Michael McGreevy had an impressive start against the Reds. In his previous start against the Reds on August 30, he only allowed one point to five hits through six innings to win the victory. Tonight he threw seven shut-out innings, allowing only three hits and three walks against Reds to stroke people. His six strikeouts were his second highest total of the season.
The best chance of the Reds to score came in the second inning when Sal Stewart worked a walk and Will Benson hit to turn on two runners without outs. Tyler Stephenson, however, would ground a double game to kill any chances for a large collection. Elly de la Cruz ran to expand the inning, but Ke’bryan Hayes was on his way to end the threat. After the two-out Double of Gavin Lux in the third inning, the Reds would not have another second base, and the last 12 Reds stroke people of the game were retired by cardinals pitching.
Important moment of the game
Cardinals Rookie Thomas Saggese Homde to the left midfield with a runner on the base in the third inning to extend the lead of St. Louis to 3-0 and to bring the game out of reach.
Notes worth mentioning
-The walk that Sal Stewart pulled in the second inning was the first walk of his young MLB career.
-When Scott Barlow entered the match for the relief of Abbott in the fifth inning, it was his 73rd appearance of the season, a career high for him.
-The Mets defeated the Padres 8-3 tonight, so the Reds leave three games behind New York for the last National League Wild Card place.
