Cignetti, IU football continues to rewrite history with road win against No. 3 Oregon

At his press conference at Big Ten media day in July, Curt Cignetti boasted that his freshman season was the best in 127 years of football at Indiana University.

Even after reaching the College Football Playoff, Indiana still had doubts that Cignetti was building something lasting in Bloomington.

In those 127 mostly putrid seasons, Indiana had never beaten a top-five team — the longest drought in college football history. Going into Saturday’s heavyweight matchup, the Hoosiers had played 46 road games against the top five AP teams. All 46 ended in losses.

With the best team in program history on the field, Cignetti and No. 7 Indiana traveled to Autzen Stadium. There the Hoosiers defeated No. 3 Oregon 30-20.

“I’m really proud of the team and the coaches,” Cignetti said after the game. “It’s a great road win.”

The 10-point victory ended Oregon’s league-leading 18-game home winning streak.

Saturday’s result did not come about by chance; it was set in motion days before the team even arrived in Eugene.

As of Cignetti’s press conference on Monday, Indiana’s tone was very different from last year’s big games.

In road losses to eventual national champions and last season’s runner-up, Indiana seemed happy in high-leverage games. The play-calling was conservative and the players seemed intimidated by their opponent.

Indiana started the week on a much more positive note ahead of Saturday’s date with the Ducks.

The focus shifted to faith – throwing off self-imposed limitations and rejecting the idea of staying close to the best in the country.

Cignetti shared this belief with his players, convinced that with the right approach the result would be a victory.

“We had the mentality that we were always going to win,” quarterback Fernando Mendoza said. “We had confidence in our staff that we would come out on top.”

A first-play sack of Oregon quarterback Dante Moore made it clear; Indiana wasn’t the same team as last year.

Even after Moore exposed safety Amare Farrell for a 44-yard touchdown pass, Indiana’s offense marched down the field for a 9-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to take back the lead.

“The most important thing for me was our mentality going into this match,” Cignetti said. “We passed that test.”

Indiana played complementary football for the first of what became many plays Saturday. As the game progressed and the heavyweights traded blows, Indiana continued to respond.

Indiana always had an answer to whatever Oregon threw at them, no matter the situation.

Adversity struck Mendoza early in the fourth quarter when he threw a pick-six that tied the game.

After a costly mistake, Mendoza regrouped and led his team down the field. The 12-play drive ended at the hands of confident receiver Elijah Sarratt, which ultimately became the game-winning drive.

“There was no panic,” Mendoza recalls. “We had to overcome adversity at some point and I think we showed that perfectly.”

In the 30 years leading up to Cignetti’s arrival in December 2023, Indiana had averaged four wins per season.

Now 17-2 through two seasons, Cignetti continues to reshape the narrative of Indiana University football.

Indiana earned its sixth win of the season and is bowl eligible for the second straight season. The six-win threshold used to be the benchmark for an IU football coach.

The Hoosiers’ sixth victory carried far more weight than bowl eligibility. It was a declaration that Indiana is a legitimate national championship contender.

“It puts us in a position where we can continue to be successful,” Cignetti said. “We have to show up to work on Monday working as a team, humble and hungry, ready to compete against Michigan State.”

The victory not only wrote history, but also made a statement.

Saturday afternoon’s win did more than just silence Indiana’s doubters. It reaffirmed that Indiana is indeed the rising superpower in college football.
