Chris Sutton questions Liverpool recruitment after ‘disastrous start’

For all the optimism of summer, even the most patient among us can admit it’s been a rough few weeks.

Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City summed up what BBC pundit Chris Sutton called it “a disastrous start” to our Premier League title defense.

The former striker did not hold out BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Clubarguing that the £415m spent on reinforcements over the summer “didn’t work” and that too many of the new faces “have not yet gotten off the ground”.

Sutton’s verdict followed a damning assessment of the champions’ performance at the Etihad, where we didn’t register a shot on target until the 76th minute.

“It was a disastrous start” said Sutton. “The new signings haven’t delivered yet and you’re seeing a loss of confidence. You can spend £400 million but if the balance sheet isn’t right you’re in trouble.”

That sentiment echoes what Jamie Carragher argued when he said Liverpool “got it wrong” trying to build a more attacking team after winning the league last season.

He felt Arne Slot’s desire to create “sexy football” has instead exposed us, a shift that Sutton clearly agrees with.

Interestingly, Sutton also echoed some of Rory Smith’s defense of our boss, noting that there are deeper reasons behind the “leggy” performances we’ve seen.

Smith emphasized the “human aspect” about the death of Diogo Jota and how our preseason was disrupted “I threw it back a few weeks.”

Sutton agreed, but warned that apologies will only last so long if the results don’t change.

His comments also follow his earlier claim that our head coach has lost confidence in Milos Kerkez, suggesting that the Dutchman’s decisions at the start of the season may have disrupted our rhythm even further.

Now that we sit in eighth place, eight points behind Arsenal, it is clear that Sutton’s words reflect what many of us are feeling: frustration mixed with the faint hope that this “disastrous start” can still be turned around.
