Choline is a nutrient needed for the brain to produce an important neurotransmitter called Acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is synthesized from choline and involved in memory, circadian rhythm and muscle control. Each of these specific functions contribute to the impact it has on cardiovascular health, liver diseases, neural tube defects and cognitive health.
There are synapses between nerves in the brain that depend on acetylcholine to communicate. Scientists have discovered that the use of drugs that inhibit levels of enzymes that break down acetylcholine increases acetylcholine in the brain, and this has proven to be useful in the treatment of Alzheimer’s dementia.
Furthermore, many drugs, including most freedom societies, have an anticholinergic effect, which means that they cause a decrease in acetylcholine. Research has proven that regular intake of these drugs increases the risk of dementia in people aged 55 and older.
To make things, the worst studies have shown that up to 90% of American citizens have cholineficiency. When you combine a deficient choline intake of diet with commonly used medicines that exhaust acetylcholine, set the perfect storm for dementia! The good news is that with targeted eating or supplementation it easily takes adequate choline content to prevent dementia!
There are different foods with high levels of choline. The food with the highest level of choline is liver with no less than 356 mg per 3 grams. Another food with a high level is egg yolks. Beef, seafood and poultry are also good sources of choline. Unfortunately, many of these foods, such as egg yolks, are unfairly demonized and incorrectly connected to the cause of high blood cholesterol. This is not the case! One egg yolk contains approximately 130 mg of choline, which is 25% – 30% of your daily requirement.
For adults, the daily required 400 mg is for female and 545 mg for men. Without eating egg yolks or liver regularly, you almost certainly have a shortage of choline, where supplementation arrives.
Choline supplements
Another way to guarantee an adequate intake of choline is by supplementing. There are four types of choline supplements -ordinary choline and cholinebitartrate are the least expensive types, but do not support the production of acetylcholine and DFP choline aka citicoline or Alfa GPC choline.
