Launched recently, the Chery Tiggo 8 (without the Pro suffix) is now the most affordable seven-seater Chery in Malaysia. At RM130k, it charges RM30k less than both its Pro (this is on paper, before massive discounts) and its PHEV brethren. In the crosshairs are the RM119k-124k Jetour VT9 and RM124k-153k Proton X90 (facelift available soon). Now that it’s in showrooms, let’s take a closer look.

Yep, the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro and Jaecoo J7 have lent their 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo engines to this big fella here, so you now have a modest 197bhp and 290Nm of torque (see that new 290T badge on the tailgate? It’s 390T on the Pro). The gearbox remains a seven-speed DCT.

For comparison, the Tiggo 8 Pro has a 256 hp/390 Nm 2.0-liter turbo engine, while the Tiggo 8 PHEV combines a 143 hp/215 Nm 1.5-liter turbo Miller-cycle four-cylinder engine with a 204 hp/310 Nm electric motor, giving you a combined torque of 275 hp and 365 Nm.

The T8 looks familiar from the front, but the back has a different appearance thanks to lamps that are no longer connected by an LED strip. The rear lights themselves are also different and the Chery lettering is placed higher. The quad pipes have been replaced with one tip on each side. The wheels are 18-inch ones with 235/55 tires (an inch less than the T8P’s 19s), but they still look adequate.

The dashboard also differs from the horizontal layout of the Pro’s merged screen. Here the 10.25-inch digital gauge and 12.3-inch infotainment screen live separately, and underneath is another screen for the AC controls. The center console has the same style as the Tiggo Cross. This older rear end and interior are similar to the Tiggo 8 previewed here in 2022, although that car was a 2.0T ‘Pro Max’.

The dashboard design may be older, but the standard kit list still includes eight Sony speakers, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-pane acoustic glass, dual-zone automatic climate control, an electric sunroof with sunshade, a 360 camera, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, ambient lighting and electrically adjustable front seats with driver’s side memory. You can get your car in dark black or khaki white.

On the safety front, the non-Pro gets six airbags instead of nine, sacrificing the driver’s knee unit and rear side airbags. The more basic ADAS package lacks lane keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control and traffic jam assistance – not actually level 2. Full spec sheet below.

The RM129,800 Tiggo 8 comes with a seven-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty and a 10-year/one million km engine warranty. There are also five years of all-inclusive complimentary service and a one-year Chery Insurance Program.
