Chelsea -star Neto admits players, not on Maresca’s fault

Chelsea -wing player Pedro Neto has admitted that the players should be blamed for the recent bad form of the team, not for manager Enzo Maresca.

The Italian has been examined in recent weeks for losing back-to-back games in the Premier League matches after he had gone to ten men.

On both occasions, Maresca made defensive changes after red cards for Robert Sanchez and Trevoh Chalobah against Manchester United and Brighton, respectively, for them to give five goals.

Speaking at the press conference before the match prior to Chelsea’s Champions League collision with Benfica on Stamford Bridge, Neto explained why fans were frustrated by Maresca despite winning two trophies in his first season.

“It is true in football,” said the Portugal International. ‘One day you are the best, if you lose another day, you are the worst.

“So when the manager won, he was the best in the world and now he loses, he is the worst. It’s the same for players.”

Jose Mourinho returns to his former club, with whom he won three Premier League titles in two Stints, after he recently replaced Bruno Lage as Benfica manager.

Asked for comparisons between Maresca and the special, Neto replied: “Jose is part of the club’s story and Maresca is here to do his best and he can’t do better than he does because it is not just his fault, it is the players’ fault.

“We are on the field, we also have to blame and do much better and concentrate on ourselves and learn from our mistakes.”
