Chagall and the Art of the Mosaic: the less well -known face of the master shown in Ravenna – Ravenna – Arte.it

Ravenna – In 1954, when Marc Chagall visited in Ravenna for the first time, it was deeply impressed by the beauty and spirituality of the Byzantine mosaics.
He was enough for him to participate in the exhibition of the modern mosaics, then, on the initiative of Giuseppe Bovini, the then director of the National Museum of Ravenna and via the art historian Lionello Venturi, the Russian painter won participation in the big event. That exhibition, which had illustrious names of art history in the scientific committee such as Giulio Carlo Argan and Palma Bucarelli, represents a unique in the National Scene and in the evolution of contemporary mosaic, thanks to the collaboration of Ravenna mosaics with internationally Verheerlijking artists.
The guests, one of the most famous masters of the time in Italy, from Afro to Giuseppe Capogrossi, from Renato Guttuso to Emilio Vedova, had sent BOZZETTI on rigid paper for the occasion. And mosaics, starting with those drawings, had made their mosaic interpretations.
Many of these interpretations nowadays form the historical core of the mosaic collection of the Mar Museum of Art of the city.

The public will be able to follow the story of fourteen projects of Marc Chagall, usually monumental, spread between the south of France, the United States, Israel and Switzerland, with a complete panorama of the mosaics created by the artist between 1958 and 1986, with works from international institutions and collections.

For the first time in Italy, the big mosaic will arrive The great sun (1965-1967), a masterpiece made by Chagall with Lino Melano, originally donated by the artist to his wife Valentina as an intimate and poetic tribute for their home “La Hills” in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
