There is no doubt that “Bones” is one of the most talented fighters to ever enter the MMA world. His only defeat is highly controversial, as he was disqualified in his 2009 fight against Matt Hamill for using 12-6 elbows, which was illegal at the time. Many argued that referee Steve Mazzagatti should have stopped the fight long before Jones even landed elbows.
Despite the slur, Jones is widely considered the greatest MMA fighter of all time, but that’s if you don’t take into account his failed drug tests. “Bones” jumped for Clomiphene and Letrozole ahead of a scheduled UFC 200 fight with Daniel Cormier. At the time, Jones denied deliberately using the banned substances, and traced the flagged test to sexual enhancement pills.
Jones then scored turinabol, which led to his UFC 214 win over Cormier being nullified. In a new video YouTube channelChael Sonnen said he can’t bring himself to chastise Jones in terms of GOAT talk because of the failed drug tests (via MMA Junkie).
“I think when you have the conversation with the greatest of all time to exclude Jon Jones, I don’t know of Jon ever taking anything that everyone else didn’t take, but he got busted for it,” Sonnen said. “I’m going to have to say no. My final analysis is no. Jon Jones failing a PED test does not make him the cleanest fighter of all time. It does not disqualify him from being the greatest fighter of all time.”
Jones’ fighting future is very much up in the air. The surefire future UFC Hall of Famer recently admitted that he has arthritis in his left hip. In a follow-up interview with Helen Yee over Super Bowl LX weekend, Jones said his professional MMA career could be over.
