Trade Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday said that the central government is studying the implications of the US to impose a rate of 25 percent on the export of India. Goyal added that the center will take all the necessary steps to protect the national interest of India. Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Goyal emphasized that India has switched from the labeled of a “fragile” economy to the right way to becoming the second largest economy in the world-a clear reaction to Trump that India calls a “dead economy”.

Trump announced a rate of 25 percent on all Indian goods that enter the US on Wednesday, together with a non -specific fine for the country that buys energy from Russia. Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Goyal said that India and the US negotiations started a bilateral trade agreement in March with the aim of completing the first phase in November 2025. The first physical meeting was held in March in New Delhi, followed by four more meetings in the Indian capital and Washington DC. Various virtual meetings have also been held, he said.

Goyal said: “The implications of recent developments are being investigated by the government. The Ministry of Trade and the industry is working on all stakeholders, including exporters and the industry for taking feedback on their assessment of the situation.” The minister added: “The government attaches great importance to protecting and promoting the well -being of our farmers, employees, entrepreneurs, exporters, MSMEs and all sections of industry. We will take all the necessary steps to protect and promote our national interest.”
