Wilfried Nancy’s first Glasgow Derby clash with Rangers did not go as planned.
Rangers erased an early first-half deficit to beat Celtic 3-1 at Parkhead on Saturday, piling further pressure on the former Columbus Crew head coach. Saturday’s result took Rangers level with Celtic on 38 points each in the Scottish Premier League and handed Nancy its sixth defeat from eight games in charge.
Hyun-Jun Yang put the reigning champions ahead after twenty minutes and gave Celtic a 1-0 lead that they would take into half-time. Yang raced onto the pitch in possession before unleashing a powerful shot that crept into the roof of the net.
However, Danny Rohl’s side would rally in the second half and take advantage of poor Celtic defending.
Youssef Chermiti equalized for the visitors in the 50th minute, finishing Nicolas Raskin’s pass into the back of the net.
Chermiti ran his own number for Rangers’ go-ahead goal in the 59th minute, racing down the left flank before drilling a shot past Kasper Schmeichel.
Mikey Moore added a third and final goal for Rangers with twenty minutes to play, cutting a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner.
Rangers retained the crucial three points against their local rivals to hand Celtic their third defeat in the last five games. Despite beating Rangers 3-1 in the League Cup semi-finals earlier this season, Celtic have failed to claim a league victory over them since September 2024.
US men’s national team centre-back Auston Trusty played the full 90 minutes of the match, but had a tough day overall with the rest of the Celtic backline.
Celtic will look to make a quick recovery when Dundee United come to town on January 10, but there could be a new manager at the helm after Nancy’s poor start in Glasgow.
