While Ruben Amorim had made it clear he needed midfield reinforcements in the summer, Manchester United decided to focus on strengthening their attack.
Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko came in, but despite the head coach’s pleas, Carlos Baleba did not arrive due to his huge rating.
A desperate attempt to sign Conor Gallagher on loan from Atletico Madrid on deadline day was mounted, but that too failed to materialise.
This left the Portuguese tactician forced to start the season with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in the middle of the park. Both have fantastic passing range, but they have left plenty of space for the opposition to take advantage.
Reinforcements needed in midfield
The Brazilian was expected to be sold when Amorim arrived, but his professionalism on and off the pitch eventually forced the head coach to change his mind.
His current contract runs until next year, with the Red Devils having the option of a one-year extension. But given his mega wages, INEOS would prefer not to grant him a new deal.
Instead, Sir Jim Ratcliffe will try to help him further, and according to Foot Italya January departure cannot be discounted as the co-owners look to raise a bit of money through his sale rather than allow him to leave as a free agent.
The Saudi Pro League clubs are circling, but with next year’s World Cup in mind, the five-time Champions League winner may want to stay in Europe.
INEOS is open to Casemiro sales
Fiorentina are ready to strike but Casemiro will have to agree to a huge pay cut to reunite with former United legend David de Gea at the Artemio Franchi Stadium.
“Although Casemiro is a key member of Ruben Amorim’s squad, United are reportedly looking to offload the Brazilian before his deal expires.
“An important factor is Casemiro’s salary, as the 33-year-old reportedly earns more than €400,000 per week and is the highest-paid player at the club.
“The former Real Madrid midfielder was closely linked with a move to Saudi Arabia during the 2024 and 2025 summer transfer window, but a deal failed to materialize.
“Other clubs have also shown interest in the five-time Champions League winner, but a new option has entered the fray with Fiorentina reportedly considering a move for the Brazilian star.
Fiorentina eyes sensational move
“La Viola have struck gold by signing a player believed to be struggling at Manchester United in David de Gea. The Spaniard could play a big role in convincing his former teammate to move to Italy.
“Casemiro would have to take a significant pay cut if he moves to Serie A as Moise Kean is reportedly the highest-paid player in Florence – earning €110,000 per week.
The former Real Madrid superstar has a current market value of €10 million and only time will tell if the Serie A side can afford to pay a significant transfer fee and his huge wages.
Amorim will be out of options if the Brazilian leaves, so INEOS will either have to recruit a quality replacement or risk a potential clash with the head coach.
