Carson Spiers re-signs with the Cincinnati Reds for 2026 – Redleg Nation

The Cincinnati Reds are bringing back right-handed pitcher Carson Spiers. The club did not offer him on Friday afternoon. That left him off the 40-man roster and automatically made him a free agent. The two teams didn’t waste much time getting back together, as they agreed to a minor league deal for the 2026 season that included an invitation to major league spring training.

The 2025 season was tough for Carson Spiers. He spent most of the season on the injured list with multiple injuries. Spiers pulled the team out of spring training and started two games for the Reds in the first week of April. He was then optioned to Triple-A, where he made one start before returning to Cincinnati’s bullpen for one game on April 19.

After that performance in Baltimore, he was placed on the injured list due to shoulder impingement. He would miss the entire month of May and June before leaving on a rehab assignment in early July. Spiers made one appearance in Arizona before moving to Triple-A Louisville to continue his rehabilitation. After three appearances there, he was recalled from that assignment and remained on the injured list. This time, however, it was due to his elbow and the injury was so bad that surgery was required in late July. It was never specified whether he had undergone full Tommy John surgery or an internal bracing procedure. However, the expectation is that he will likely miss much of, if not all of, the 2026 season.

Even with a good recovery, he won’t be seven months removed from surgery when spring training begins. The chances of him pitching in the spring are virtually nil. So if you’re wondering why he got an invite to major league camp, it’s probably just because he asked to take it, since you get extra things/benefits in the spring at major league camp that you don’t get at minor league camp.

It seems like the Reds are hoping for two things with this type of signing. One would be that Spiers can bounce back quickly and potentially be ready to pitch sometime in the second half of the season/late in the year. Or two, that he comes back in 2026 so he can rehab with the team in their facilities and all of that, even if he can’t return to the mound this season, it could earn them some goodwill if they want to bring him back in 2027.
