Carragher cuts Neville off after Chelsea comment on Liverpool match

Liverpool’s meeting with Chelsea may have been a thriller for the neutrals, but as Jamie Carragher reminded Gary Neville, it wasn’t so much fun for those of us on the red side.

Speaking The Overlap’s live show from RomeNeville tried to praise the matchday spectacle at Stamford Bridge before Carragher intervened with a quick dose of reality.

“I was at the Chelsea-Liverpool match on Saturday and I felt like there were two teams going for each other,” he said. Neville said. “It was a brilliant match. The atmosphere was unbelievable.”

But Carragher cut him sharply. “That’s it [chaotic] if you were a Liverpool fan,” the 47-year-old joked, causing the audience to laugh.

Neville pushed back, insisting it was far from disorderly: “No, that’s not chaotic. That was a brilliant match and the atmosphere was incredible.”

Carragher’s curt response summed up the feeling many of us had after the late defeat: brilliant for the neutral side perhaps, but painful for those emotionally on Arne Slot’s side.

The Overlap substitution came after our 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, where substitute Estevao struck in the 96th minute to deny us a point before the international break.

That result meant it was three defeats and led to discussion about Liverpool’s game management under our head coach.

The Reds created chances, with Cody Gakpo equalizing from close range, before late drama decided the tie.

But Neville’s use of “brilliant” felt at odds with what many of us saw, a frantic finish where we let the game be too open and opened ourselves up to lost points.

Carragher’s one-liner fits in nicely with recent criticism and Virgil van Dijk was forced to defend his defense over whether they were missing Trent Alexander-Arnold.

That late heartbreak also highlighted the importance of leadership on the pitch, although Gary Neville said it was our midfield that was overrun during the match.

Neville saw amusement. Carragher saw disorder. And most of us probably agreed with the latter.
