The CG United Super50 Cup has been reduced to 16 matches for the 2025 season, down from the usual 31-match slate. Cricket West Indies has also confirmed that the upcoming edition of the region’s premier 50-over competition will not feature the West Indies Academy or Combined Campuses and Colleges.
The changes are the result of what the CWI calls a ‘challenging financial period for the organization’. The tournament will now be contested over eleven days, entirely in Trinidad & Tobago from November 19 to 29, with plans for the play-offs in Guyana being scrapped. The new format will see teams compete in a round-robin structure, with the top two teams qualifying directly for the finals.
Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe says the shake-up gives the CWI the flexibility to allocate funds elsewhere. “This reformed format allows us to maintain a high level of competition while refocusing our resources on building a stronger, more sustainable development path,” he said.
Bascombe believes the reduction in the number of matches will encourage a more direct approach to teams. He said:[It] means that teams now need to be more deliberate and strategic in their preparation, so that they can get off to a good start from the very first match.”
He also states that members of displaced teams can still complete a route. “While the absence of the CCC and the West Indies Academy from this year’s tournament changes the dynamics, it also opens the door for these players to compete for selection within their territorial franchises,” Bascombe said. “This additional competition for places should raise the overall level of play and sharpen the focus of every player involved.”
The champions will win $100,000, with $50,000 awarded to the runners-up, while the third- and fourth-place teams will take home $25,000 each.
