Bernard Denis Julien, the elegant Trinidadian all-rounder who helped the West Indies to the one-day era, died at the age of 75. A member of Clive Lloyd’s victory in 1975, he was confirmed that he had left in Trinidad on the night of October 4.
Julien, born on March 13, 1950, was that rare blend: a right batter that could both wave it firmly to the left and, when needed, switch to the left arm. He played 24 tests and 12 odis for West India from 1973-1977, scored 866 tests on 30.92 with two centuries and took 50 test wickets; In ODIs he added 18 wickets.
His test batting announced himself at Lord’s in 1973: a sparkling 121 out of 127 balls in only his third test, alongside Garry Sobers. With the ball he was a partnership breaker, his best figures 5/57.
In the World Cup of 1975 he was vital in the middle of the middle: 4/20 against Sri Lanka, 4/27 in the semi-final against New Zealand, and a composed 26* in the final in Lord’s as West India defeated Australia. Contemporary tribute is rightly emphasized that the measurement of enchantment and its cool pressure; Some accounts also credit him with 2/38 in the squeeze of the final.
Julien’s County Years with Kent (1970–1977) confirmed his reputation as a crowd -plunder -Cap #152 -who contributed with both bat and ball in title -winning sides and left a print on those who saw him sliding to the Meuse and beating the line.
His international career, like several of his generation, was shortened by the attraction of World Series Cricket and later the Rebel Tours to South Africa from the Apartheid age, after which he did not return to the West India. After playing, he served in sports and coaching at home in Trinidad and Tobago.
Stylish, versatile, reliable-that is how teammates and historians have remembered Bernard Julien. For supporters of West -India he remains the archetypal all -rounder from the 70s: Afro Halohing the Whites, Easy Rhythm with bat and ball, and a talent to deliver exactly when a game was needed. Rest easy, Bernard.
