Car -sales DIP for the fourth consecutive month as manufacturers wait for GST revision

The sale of driving fell for the fourth consecutive month in August with car manufacturers who calibrated shipments to dealers prior to the announcement of the revised GST rates.

According to data released by the industrial Body Society or Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) 321,840 vehicles were sent from factories to dealers last month, which is a decrease of 8.8% more than 352,921 units that were sold in the same period last year.

Rajesh Menon, director-general, Siam said: “Sale of passenger vehicles in August 2025 grew up with (-) 8.8%, with the turnover of 3.22 LAKH units placed compared to August last year, mainly as a result of hercalibration of dispatches of passenger vehicles.”

Those of two -wheelers rose in August by 7.1% to 1,833,921 units. While the sale of scooters rose by 12.7% to 683,397 units, those of motorcycles grew last month by 4.3% to 1,106,638 units. The sale of mopeds fell by 1.5% to 43,886 units in the same period.


“The milestone decision of the government of India to lower the GST rates on vehicles will go a long way in making broader access to mobility and a new momentum in the Indian car sector added to an interaction in the coming party season,” Menon added.
