After winning the Tasmanian Derby, Captain Perfect was forced to race wide and without cover when he was placed in both the heat and final of the Victoria Derby.
Last night, with three points, driver Mark Pitt managed to run past stablemate Viney in the early stages and has never had serious problems since. The other desired stablemate Storms Collide from the second row was sent around the field to race one out, giving Calexico a one out and one back sit.
CAPTAIN PERFECT NOVEMBER 15 REPEAT
Pitt had Captain Perfect running along and he had a winning break on the right. Viney started to make up some ground on the home straight, but Captain Perfect had the upper hand a yard from Viney, as Sao Paolo Simba shuffled back through the field to eventually come home for third.
Should Sao Paolo Simba draw in the front row, he could turn the tables, but on the night all the credit goes to Captain Perfect.
Mark Pitt was full of praise for Captain Perfect
He’s a bit underrated. He’s a tough guy. He likes to roll along at a real pace. He doesn’t seem to have very high speed. If he can get rolling and get to that high speed, he can keep it up for a long time.
It was a big feather in the cap. It’s great to get up early in the night. There is still much more to go. You keep driving your night out and it works out in my favor.
I think this man is a very good horse. In time he will get better. He’s probably the best one I’m sitting on tonight.
The other qualifiers Storms Collide, Calexico and Coastal Dream are all capable three-year-olds and it looks like the barrier draw will be the main factor in determining who will start as favorites in next week’s Final.
