The Parliament of Canada was placed under Lockdown on Saturday after a man had curled up in the East Block on the Hill parliament, which led to a large safety reaction and warnings to the public to take cover.
Ottawa Police and the Parliamentary protective service were called on the spot on Wellington Street, where the senators of the eastern and their staff, shortly before 3 p.m. local time. The area was evacuated shortly thereafter and a “shelter-on-place” order remained in force in the evening when heavily armed officers from the site decreased.
At 2.45 pm the parliamentary protective service issued an emergency warning in which the inside was insisted to “seek shelter in the nearest room, close and lock all doors,” said CTV News.
From Saturday evening, the police confirmed that there were no known injuries and said the situation was locked up, New York Post reported. However, the Lockdown remained in force when officers continued to treat the incident with the highest level of caution.
“Stay safe Ottawa,” published Canadian Senator Patrick Brazeau on X and shared a photo of the emergency warning published during the incident.
Global News told law enforcement sources that, although the immediate threat had been brought under control, the authorities went further as if it were a “potentially sausage-case scenario” to guarantee complete safety.
The parliament is currently dissolved prior to a coming federal elections, but staff and others were still present in the East Block when the warning was activated.
Residents were asked to stay away from the area. The Ottawa police said that the road closures on Wellington Street remained in place, from bank street to sussex drive, until further notice.
