Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek became the newest seed that fell in the Canadian open when she suffered a surprising defeat in the fourth round by Clara Tauson.

Tauson van Denmark, in 19th place, rubbed her loss of the fourth round against Swiatek in Wimbledon last month with a 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 victory over the second seed in Montreal.

The output of Swiatek comes after Top Zaad Coco Gauff, two -time defending champion Jessica Pegula and fourth seed Mirra Andreeva were all eliminated.

“It is clearly really great and it shows all the hard work I have done, the right thing is,” said Tauson, who won her third WTA title in January – her first since 2021.

“I get more confidence in this kind of level and the feeling that I hear a little more here. I think that really helped me in the important points today.”

Tauson will be confronted with Australian open champion Madison Keys in the quarterfinals after the American has saved two match points on the way to a 4-6 6-3 7-5 victory over the Czech Karolina Muchova.

Earlier on Sunday, four-time big winner Naomi Osaka only lost one match when she surpassed the Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia to complete a 6-1 6-0 win in 49 minutes.

The Japanese Osaka, twice a winner at the US and Australian OpenS, is looking for her first title since he returned from the pregnancy leave at the beginning of 2024.

The 27-year-old divorced company with coach Patrick Mouratoglou after less than a year and now works with Tomasz Wiktorowski in Poland, former coach of Swiatek.

“I had a solid plan here and it happened to be pretty good,” said Osaka, currently ranked 49 in the world.
