TV and film prizes decide that nominees should be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
The Canadian Screen Awards, will prohibit foreign talent, including American actors, to be eligible in its annual prizes.
“To best celebrate and honor Canadians who work on Canadian productions, individuals must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada to be eligible for a Canadian Screen Award,” said the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television in a statement.
During the 2025 CSAs, Cate Blanchett won for the best main performance in a comedy for her role in Guy Maddin’s RumorAnd The studentA co-production of Canada-Ireland-Denmark earned the best film prize. Sebastian Stan also won for his representation of Trump, while the best supporting actor win was awarded to Jeremy Strong for his performance as Roy Cohn.
The vice-president of the Academy of Programming and Awards said that members sent “quite a bit of feedback” about the Canadian content of the show, which serves as a native version of Hollywood’s with stars-lined Emmy and Oscar Galas.
“There were references to our mandate about celebrating the best in the Canadian stories and members really made it clear that they thought we might have to look at this rule,” said Louis Calabro in an interview.
“Part of it is probably to do with who wins and who is nominated. Part of it is where we are simply politically,” he said.
“The most important message was: it is a Canadian Awards show, it’s for Canadians, let’s make the change.”
“At a time when the cultural sovereignty of Canada is under pressure, the Canadian Screen Awards are uniquely positioned to celebrate Canadian excellence, with Canadian artists in the center. This decision is an essential investment in the cultural future of Canada,” said the Actors in a statement.
In Australia the most recent Logie Awards Nominated international actors such as Ben Miller (Austin), Clancy Brown (Good police officer / bad agent), Leighton Meester (Good police officer / bad agent), Sally Phillips (Austin), Kaitlyn Dever (Apple cider vinegar), Lloyd Griffith (Return to Paradise). None of them attended the Awards evening.
