This funding is part of an $800,000 commitment over two years aimed at removing barriers and increasing sports participation among underrepresented groups, including Black, Indigenous, racialized, 2SLGBTQI+ individuals, low-income families, individuals with disabilities, newcomers and seniors.
Susan Ahrens, CEO of Field Hockey Canada, said Field Hockey Canada is pleased and proud to continue to provide financial support to local communities, allowing them to provide safe, inclusive and accessible hockey experiences. She also notes how successful the program has been so far and looks forward to the next wave of community funding.
“The volume and reach of projects from communities across the country is extremely gratifying to see. This is systemic change in action. Bringing communities closer to Field Hockey Canada as the national governing body and in turn bringing more people to the sport and allowing them to enjoy the incredible benefits that playing hockey brings to our lives,” Ahrens said. “This funding will impact lives and communities across Canada, building a stronger, healthier and more connected society. We urge every community to apply for this support and actively impact their local community.”
Three important initiatives for 2025-2026
This year’s CSAI funding will continue to support projects under three targeted streams:
Stay together
Stick Together is aimed at disadvantaged groups and builds on the successes of previous years to provide free field hockey opportunities. It promotes accessible community sport, promotes social connections and develops local leadership. Successful projects will provide low-to-zero programming for all ages, genders and backgrounds, and will engage community representatives as leaders.
Field Hockey Canada encourages all clubs and communities across Canada to offer these types of programs and will support them in activating successful Stick Together projects. Proven approaches include school programmes, local ‘come and try’ festivals and place-based projects in remote communities. (INSERT PROJECT EXAMPLES HERE)
Walking hockey
Designed for seniors (55+) and those with limited mobility, Walking Hockey promotes physical activity and social engagement through a modified, low-impact version of field hockey. This program aligns with Field Hockey Canada’s priority to increase opportunities for this underserved population and ensure participation at minimal or no cost.
The organization believes that all clubs should offer this program and will support communities in launching successful Walking Hockey initiatives.
Hockey ID
This initiative offers safe, inclusive hockey opportunities, specifically for people with intellectual disabilities. Hockey ID is an internationally recognized adaptation of the sport, helping participants build self-confidence, social skills and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Successful projects will identify local leadership familiar with the intellectual disability community to ensure meaningful and accessible sporting experiences. Field Hockey Canada is committed to supporting clubs and communities in activating Hockey ID programs across the country.
