University of Pei to organize on Halloween -Weekend in Charlottetown

Field Hockey Canada, in collaboration with U Sports, is delighted to announce that the 2025 University Championship is being organized at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) from October 30 to November 2, 2025. This marks the second consecutive year of the new, extensive size in 2024 in York University.

Last year’s event, the University of Victoria Vikes saw the national title claiming after a Round-Robin tournament with four teams from all over the country. The tournament format includes one team from the Canada West, Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Atlantic University Field Hockey League, plus the Gastuniversity. This format ensures representation from all over the country that compete for the national title.

The 2025 edition continues the Hostingplan of Field Hockey Canada, aimed at building a sustainable and inclusive national championship. The selection of UPEI as a host emphasizes the growth of hockey in the Atlantic region and strengthens the commitment to long -term development at all university conferences.

The last time the university championships were organized in Atlantic Canada was in 2002, when the event was organized in Halifax. The tournament was also organized in Halifax in 1991 and 1976.

Jane Vessey, director of athletics and recreation, said that hosting the national championship is a milestone moment for the UPEI program.

“This event is proof of the growth of field hockey at Upei and in our province,” said Vessey. “It is an incredible opportunity to show the talent of our student athletes while we welcome the nation to our campus. We can’t be proud.”

You Sports Chief Sport Officer, Matthew Davies, said that the championship to UPEI perfectly matches you goals of the U Sports Partnership.

“It is exciting to see the university field hockey championship for the first time to Pei,” said Davies. “An important objective of this partnership is to let our partners grow their sport at university level, and we see that in 2025 as championship heads to Upei, an institution that recently organized four very successful U -sports championships. We know that the Veldhockey Canada and Upei will do a great time in more than two of the Hockey teams.”

Susan Ahrens, CEO of Field Hockey Canada, said that last year’s event was a huge success in the national championship portfolio and this year is enthusiastic for the growth and momentum in Charlottetown.

“When we first sat down with you -sport and other leaders from universities throughout the country, it was clear that Veldhockey was linging that the university subjects offered an unparalleled opportunity to support the growth of our competition from coast to coast to coast,” said Ahrens. “This is an inclusive approach to deliver a real national championship event for the best hockey athletes and schools throughout Canada. When bringing the new, extensive national championships to Prince Edward Island, we see this in action.”

Fans can follow the journey to the championship from the beginning of September, while teams play in all regions for qualification during the regular season. Ahrens went further and thanked the community, staff and the volunteers for their dedication to grow nationwide hockey.

“This is the first time back in the Atlantic provinces of the tournament in more than 20 years at a time when all Atlantic schools and provinces are involved. Growing and flourishing. Thanks for Upei for hosting, to all schools for competing and to our own Hailey Yhap for leading our locomotive in delivery of this event. Good luck to all teams!”
