Can the New TrumpRx Program Actually Save You Money? Here are the costs for 43 medications

As prescription drug costs continue to strain household budgets, President Donald Trump’s new TrumpRx platform promises to provide “immediate relief” with discounted medications.

TrumpRx is a portal that connects you to discounted offers from participating drug manufacturers.

It’s like a prescription coupon aggregator and based on the prescription saving platform GoodRx, which explains on its website that it is a “core integration partner for TrumpRx, driving drug pricing from leading brands.”

When you visit the TrumpRx website, you can search for your medication or browse through 43 medications. If you see a match to your prescription, you can click on it and you will be redirected to the pharmacy’s site to complete your purchase. You still need a valid prescription from your doctor.

The White House has signed deals with major pharmaceutical companies, including AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, Genentech, Merck and Pfizer, with plans to expand the list of participating manufacturers.

Who is eligible?

TrumpRx is currently only available to cash-paying patients. The platform explicitly states that discount prices are not available if you use insurance.

And any money you spend through TrumpRx won’t count toward your insurance deductible. For many people, that trade-off could actually cost more in the long run.

However, several groups may benefit:

  • Uninsured Americans paying full retail price
  • People with a high deductible who have not met their deductible
  • Patients whose specific medications are not covered by their insurance
  • Anyone looking for medications that their employer does not reimburse, such as certain weight loss medications

How TrumpRx Compares to Other Options

Before committing to TrumpRx, compare prices with other options you may already have access to, such as your existing insurance coverage. Be sure to check your insurance wording and copay structure first.

It’s also worth noting that certain categories may be better for discounts. The GLP-1 weight loss medications stand out because employer insurance companies often exclude them. Getting Wegovy pills for $149 versus $1,349 at retail means a significant savings – 89% off – for those who pay out of pocket.

Fertility drugs are also a potential sweet spot, as insurance usually does not cover these medications. For example, the platform advertises an 83% discount on Gonal F, which could translate into thousands of savings during in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments.

As always, it’s smart to shop around. Mark Cuban CostPlus drug website is a place to start. WelRx is another. A few extra minutes of comparing could save you hundreds or more.

Evaluate your options

Before making any changes to the way you fill prescriptions, do the following:

  1. Document your current costs.
  2. Visit TrumpRx.gov and look to see if your medications are listed.
  3. Compare the TrumpRx price to your current copay.
  4. View alternative discount programs.
  5. Calculate the impact over the entire year.
  6. Talk to your doctor about cheaper therapeutic alternatives or possible discount programs.

This platform is a new addition to your prescription savings toolkit, especially if you are uninsured, have high deductibles, or need medications that your insurance refuses to cover.
