Can teams improve other areas instead of goaltending?

Goaltending may not be the only position being filled

Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period joined Sirius XM NHL Network Radio with Scott Laughlin and Gord Stellick and stated that teams looking to improve goaltending can improve other areas to help their teams succeed.

Scott Laughlin: “I think if you look around the NHL, Dave is also back at goaltending, right? We’re curious about Laurent Brossoit working his way back to the Blackhawks. But obviously that’s not the case, there’s no place at the table in Chicago for a while, right? Spencer Knight and Arvid Soderblom seem to be that one-two punch in the Windy City for now and for years to come.”

So Brossoit worked his way back. Obviously you’re looking at Winnipeg without (Connor Hellebuyck) for at least another month. You’re looking at the Ducks with a messed up goaltending situation, right? Lukas Dostal for a few weeks, and now Petr Mrazek is leaving for the night. Again, a silver lining might be the fact that in Ville Husso you at least have a guy in the hole who has also been the starting goaltender before.

NHL Rumors: Chicago Blackhawks looking to move Laurent Brossoit

But I’m getting some interesting sentiments here from some of these teams regarding their goal situations. And I know Stuart Skinner had an impressive shutout this weekend. But how long will that last, given his history, so the goaltending carousel. I wonder if things will pick up some steam here in the next few weeks?”

Dave Pagnotta: “I mean, Chicago might be able to make a start in that regard. Like you said with Brossoit and them making him available, or letting them know he’s available, giving his camp an opportunity to talk to other teams, to try to help facilitate something.”

You talk, you look at some of these clubs, and I mean you refer to injuries, it’s not just the skaters, it’s not just the guys up front. Naturally, this also has consequences for the netminders. With everything they’ve gotten, we’ve seen others like (Anthony) Stolarz out of action for an extended period of time, longer than the Leafs originally thought. Good thing. They’ve got (Joseph) Woll back and you know, (Denis) Hildeby has been pretty solid when called upon.

I think teams really need to evaluate where they are and whether they are going to make any moves. For example, if the Oilers are going to make a move, where is the best place they can try to improve? Is it really the goaltending, or are we better suited to fixing up our bottom six and trying to control it more? Do we need a more robust defender to close things out a little differently, and give our goaltenders a lot more help?

Like teams are looking at this and having to evaluate where they are financially, and is it more beneficial to close off another area than between the pipes? And I don’t know that we’ll see too much activity across the board.

We’re sure Pittsburgh has a lot of net minders, and they’ve been there the last few weeks to hear what’s going on with (Tristan) Jarry and so on. But I just don’t know if we’ll see too much activity regarding goaltenders this season.

NHL Rumors: The Edmonton Oilers’ Troubles, And Could Jordan Binnington Fit In?

And we can see here a few, 1, 2, 3, some kind of movement. But whatever impact it has for teams that need it like Edmonton, I don’t know if we’ll see too much happening here throughout the year. I think they’re other areas that some of these teams can focus on.
