Campbell’s Vice President Sued After Allegedly Racist, Classical Tirade About Colleagues and Products

The CEO of black-owned food company Goode Food spoke out for the people.

A massive corporate shake-up is underway at the Campbell Soup Company after a federal lawsuit uncovered an explosive audio recording in which a vice resident allegedly delivered a racist, classist and profane tirade about co-workers and the quality – or lack thereof – of the company’s food products.

The lawsuit was filed by former security analyst Robert Garza charged last week in Wayne County, Michigan Campbell’s firing for retaliation after Garza reported the contents of the recording, prompting the company to place the director on immediate leave.

Racist comments and ridicule from customers aired

According to the complaint, Garza recorded Vice President and Chief Information Security Officer Martin Bally at a meeting in November 2024, which quickly transitioned from a salary discussion to an unhinged, hour-long tirade. The recording allegedly showed Bally making several derogatory comments about employees of Indian descent.

The lawsuit alleges that Bally labeled Indian employees as “idiots” and claimed they “couldn’t think for themselves.”

In addition to the alleged racist comments, the CEO reportedly mocked the company’s customer base and products, saying, “We got s–t for f–king poor people. Who buys our s–t? I hardly buy Campbell’s products anymore. It’s not healthy now that I know what’s in them.”

Bally also reportedly joked that he avoided the company’s chicken soup because the meat came from a “3D printer” and admitted to using marijuana edibles before going to work. Garza said he kept the recording for weeks out of “pure disgust” because he needed time to process the contents. In January 2025, he said he reported Bally’s behavior — particularly the racist comments — to his supervisor, J.D. Aupperle.

On January 30, 2025, Garza, who had no prior disciplinary action or formal charges during his employment, was abruptly fired. “He never faced any disciplinary action; they never informed him of his job performance,” said Garza’s attorney Zachary Runyan.

Garza’s lawsuit claimed he was fired in retaliation for publicly disclosing the vice president’s gross misconduct and accused the company of perpetuating a racially hostile work environment. The former employee received no follow-up from human resources or any other company representative regarding an investigation or explanation for his termination.

In a statement, Campbell’s said confirmed the unrest. “We want to make sure you know the facts. Robert Garza, a former Campbell employee, recently released an alleged audio recording of him speaking with Campbell’s vice president of information technology, Martin Bally, in connection with a lawsuit Mr. Garza filed against the company.

“If the comments on the audio recording were in fact made by Mr. Bally, they are unacceptable. Such language does not reflect our values and the culture of our company. We will not tolerate that type of language under any circumstances. Mr. Bally is temporarily on leave while we conduct an investigation,” the statement continued.

“We are proud of the food we make, the people who make it and the high-quality ingredients we use to provide consumers with great food at a great value. We know millions of people use Campbell’s products, and we are humbled by the trust they place in us. The recording comments about our food are not only inaccurate, they are downright absurd. The chicken meat in our soups comes from trusted, USDA-approved U.S. suppliers and meets our high quality standards. All of our soup products are made with antibiotic-free chicken meat. Any claims to the contrary are completely false.

“Please note that the alleged comments heard on the audio were made by an individual from the IT department, who has nothing to do with the way we make our food.”

The CEO of Black food company Goode Food put out a word for people looking for high-quality, affordable, non-GMO food from a non-bigoted company.

“The VP of Campbell’s Soup was caught mocking the same people who keep their lights on…and admit their products aren’t even real food. This is exactly why family businesses matter. We don’t hide. We show up. We respond. We care,” the Instagram caption read. “Corporate America treats food like a science experiment; families treat it like food. Choose brands that actually respect you. #campbell #errand #food.”
