Cameron Smotherman will help the UFC usher in the Paramount+ era with a fight against Ricky Turcios this Saturday. If he steps into the cage, it will come on the heels of a two-fight losing streak within the UFC. While losing is never fun, it wasn’t the toughest part of the run for him.
“In the fights I’ve lost, it’s not like I’ve been pushed from pillar to post, bell to bell or anything like that,” Smotherman explained. “Like the worst thing that’s happened to me is that I’m stuck. The way to beat me is to not fight me. And so I just go back and focus on those little details.”
Not once in his three-fight UFC career has he looked back on a fight and felt like he wasn’t really the better fighter. And maybe it would be easier if that were indeed the case.
“I’ve never lost a fight and just felt like, ‘Aw man, that guy was just better.’ It just feels like I haven’t fought,” he said. “I feel like it’s almost easier to accept getting beat up knowing that I just wasn’t good enough.”
Despite being in a bad spot in terms of his recent record, it appears the UFC is still a fan of “The Baby Faced Killer.” He will take a fight on the very first map of the new platform and on top of that in a live arena. These facts make him grateful for the opportunity and willing to do something about it.
“I’m still grateful — if anything, that makes me feel like, OK, they don’t blame me that these fights, like getting booed, are so embarrassing,” Smotherman said. “That’s a nightmare for me. I want to entertain and I want to put on a show.”
Now that he knows that, his prediction for Saturday is that he will have a scoop on the UFC’s new deal.
“That will be the first knockout on Paramount+,” he declared.
You can catch Smoorman’s fight with Ricky Turcios as part of the UFC 324 prelims on Paramount+. The fight card kicks off this Saturday at 5pm EST.
