Cam Thomas could not agree with a contract extension with the NETs, which registered for a qualification body of one year that almost certainly indicates a departure.
The self-assured young guard said he would rather have control over his own future: unlimited free desk-dan a deal in the longer term that he does not like. Thomas will bet in itself and play the season, even if that means it is his last in Brooklyn.
“I would rather control my situation. As a player, that is the type of check you want in your situation; so I wanted to keep that aspect of it,” said Thomas. “I am just here to play my game and keep doing what I did: keep playing, enjoying my fifth year with the team that has set me up and just enjoy the moment and are where my feet are. I will just finish the year, and we will see what happens.”
Will that fifth year be his last in Brooklyn?
Thomas was a limited free agent this summer. But after the nets reportedly offered a two-year-old deal of $ 30 million with a team option for the second year or a year, $ 9.5 million pact with incentives up to $ 11 million while he renounced the clause with no-trade, he rejected both.
In the end, Thomas signed the qualification of $ 5.99 million that includes an implicit no-trade clause. It will make him an unlimited free agent next summer.
“You just want to keep that power that you as a player have as much as possible, as long as you can,” said Thomas. “You want to keep that little bit of power that you have in that QO if you don’t get the long -term agreement. … So it’s fair enough for this year.”
But further?
More often than not, a player who accepts the qualifying offer not only gives the honeymoon, but also the marriage.
“He approached this in a very mature way. It is part of the company. It is perhaps the ugly part of the company,” said Sean Marks, Managing Director. “So he’s a net. He knows that. He has been very frank and very mature.
“Both parties understand what is at stake. But I also don’t want to draw conclusions. Only because a common land cannot be met this summer does not mean that he is not a net in the future or the entire season.”
But the chances that Thomas is staying are not great or even good. Spencer Hawes in 2012 is considered the only player who plays a full season on the qualification body and then sign the long term with his team again.
But Thomas insisted that this does not define his future in Brooklyn.

“Nothing, really, just the business aspect of it. Nothing personal. I have not taken anything personal. I am sure they didn’t do that. So it is what it is,” Thomas shrugged. “I’m just going to be where my feet are, enjoy the year, keep playing.”
Thomas said on Tuesday at Yes Network that negotiations had been frustrating and the media told the same about some of the stories about his game. After the Ringer’s Zach Lowe described the ‘consensus’ that Thomas was an ’empty calorie ball pig’, the guard shot a profane reaction back on Twitter.
“It will be frustrating whether you want to admit it or not, that people keep trying to spread these stories and lies over you that is just not true without really looking at the facts and watching our games,” said Thomas. “I am pretty sure that not many people looked at the nets last year that actually commented.”
Thomas on average on average 24.0 points last season, but was limited to only 25 games due to several hamstring pulls. That lack of availability has contributed to a non -existent market.
“He has a chip on his shoulder as he has always done. That is the way he plays. So we expect nothing but that he goes outside and competes,” Marks said. “Cam who came from a season plagued by the injury last season clearly did not help him. He wants to come out and prove that he can be [fit]He can remain robust and healthy. And I think the work we have seen so far this summer would refer to exactly that. “
