This year a player of the New Jersey Devils was invited to participate in the showcase: Cam Squires, which was set up by the Devils in the fourth round, 122nd General, of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft.
Squires joins an elite class Rookies
Squires will join the showcase with a group of 29 other young rookies. Last year Seamus Casey participated in the showcase. He then played 14 regular season matches with the Devils and recorded eight points (four goals, four assists.) He also played one Playoff match, took 13 services and recorded 9:13 Ice Age. Just like Casey, Squires will participate in the NHLPA Rookie Showcase two years after he was prepared.
Since 2021-22, Squires has been playing for the Cape Breton Eagles in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). He has played in 255 matches for the past four seasons and has recorded 245 points (103 goals, 142 assists.) He also played in three Posteaseasons with 28 points in 24 games.
Last season Squires played his first few games with the Utica Comets, the American Hockey League team of the Devils. He played three games and recorded four points (one goal, three assists.)
In 2024, Squires signed three years boarding contract With the devils. According to Puckpedia, his contract will start this season. Although he is not on the current Comets’ selection, It seems likely that Squires will join the team at the start of the season. He already played three games and it’s time for him to get a full season on the farm.
Casey participated in the showcase last year and earned his first chance to play at NHL ICE in the same season. This was of course due to various injuries, including the shoulder injury of Jack Hughes. However, is this a sign that Squires also gets his first chance of NHL Ice? In an 82 game season, only time will learn.
