With Wiggen, Spin is now more a story than ever before with OEMs who try to press every revolution from a design.
The new Opus SP from Callaway, the next generation of their Opus WIG line, is no exception, with a new spin -pocket design to increase the center of gravity to help players help lower wedge recordings with more spider.
Here are four things to know about the new Callaway Opus SP Wedges, as well as my thoughts about the new short game tools.
1. Fast tour adoption
Callaway has one of the more impressive stables of professionals with staff members such as Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Akshay Bhatia, Min Woo Lee and so on. So if you see almost all switching into a new product immediately, it is worthwhile to take knowledge.

During the Memorial Tournament two months ago, Callaway had 18 players in the Limited Field event that De Nieuwe Wedge played on tour in the first week. Against the Scottish Open from last month, that number was a maximum of 32.
“Opus SP has been the best immediate conversion ever for a Callaway -Wig on tour,” said Zack Oakley, Sr. Manager of Callaway, Product Strategy & Category Management. “That was clearly a huge step for us, one, we continue to get the tour assistant that we have received with Opus, but also to see that the new technology is validated by the best players in the world.”
A huge blessing was the Introduction of “Shape Six”, the sixth Opus Prototype ShaPE, who played Jon Rahm two years ago for the first time on the Ryder Cup. Part of the process was to shape the openings of the opening to stream better from IJzers to Lobwiggen.
2. A new spin bag
;)
Callaway
The “SP” in Opus SP stands for spin bag that has been developed from a new two -part construction. Under the lower part of the face is a hollowed cavity that is designed to raise the CG of the wedge above the ball, which helps to launch and increase the spider.
Last year Callaway experimented with the spinning bag in the Opus Platinum product before he finally decided that they needed more time to get it right.
“In the early platinate tests, before we decided and made our end product, we had this spinning bag in it, and the signs of something special,” said Callaway R&D manager for Wigges Brian Herr. “By constantly testing, we were able to bring this to the masses, in a clean silhouette and a clean -looking product.”
The amount of weight that is moved higher and the size of the bag depends on the loft of the WIG to create a progressive CG design. More weight is moved up with a larger bag in the lobe and adjustments to form and Hosel also helps to change the CG to make it the highest in lob -wiggen and the lowest in the pitching -wig.
3. Spin per degree
;)

The addition of the spin bag helps Callaway designers to maximize the spider per degree of the WIG, which is divided by the launch angle of a shot. The lower the launch and the higher the spider, the more control a player has over a shot.
Another way in which the Opus SP helps a player to increase its spider per degree is a new spider gene 2.0 face with a new 17 ° groove angle with a tighter spit distance between grooves and deeper cross-hatch laser pattern.
“We have discovered that this Groove is specifically better in the longer rough recordings and that the identical achievements are essentially until our previous Groove,” Herr. “We see a win in that longer rough shot, more consistent twist.”
4. The X -Sleur returns
;)
Callaway
Callaway has been one to recently answer the calls of Gearheads, with the release of various Tour-only driver heads or the final American launch of the X-fallen irons.
With Opus SP, Callaway answers calls to bring the popular X Grind High Bounce option back to their LOB -Wiggen, last seen in the Raws Raw Wiggen 2022.
The X Grind is a high-bounce option with a very narrow sole and extreme heel and toe relief to combine versatility and forgiveness for a steeper swinging player or someone who plays in softer conditions.
“For that player who has a bit of a steeper swing, it might be a little more on top, but wants to bounce a little more, still like creative around the greens, we will now have that in the offer,” Oakley said.
My thoughts!
OEMs learn that they can only do so much with grooves and be confronted with technology to improve the spider, so they have to become more creative.
Progressive CGs are nothing new in Wiggen, but it is interesting to see that Callaway has essentially made a hollow -back that does not look. In contrast to a traditional cavity-back design, it clearly focuses more on increasing CG than drifting the perimeter, but the spinning bag is still essentially a cavity.
The return of the X -Sleur must also be a welcome decision for many amateur golfers – whose majority is steep – but still wants to manipulate the face around the green.
As a player who is both steep and struggles to flee wedges, I am very intrigued by both the new spider -pocket design and the X -sleur and I look forward to trying them out.
