The Calgary Flames today announced that they hired former Flame Dave Lowry as an assistant coach. With the departure of Brad Larsen this season outside season for personal reasons, the Flames had an open space and filled it with the 1000 game Nhler.
Get to know Dave Lowry
The former Nhler played more than a thousand NHL matches, divided between the Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues, Florida Panthers, San Jose Sharks and, of course, Calgary Flames. He would spend his last four seasons in the Flames organization and lead the team from 2000 to 2002, when the captain switched to Jarome Iginla. During his time he had 69 points with the flames before he hung his skates forever.
From there, Lowry would stay in Calgary and fell as an assistant in 2005 with the Calgary Hitmen before he became the team’s head coach in 2008. After only one season, he would jump to the big club for three seasons as an assistant coach for the flames.
From there, Lowry would go back to the WHL, where he coached the Victoria Royals for three seasons. He was the coach when former Flames -outlook Matthew Phillips was a player, and Phillips had nothing but much praise for the former Nhler.
From there, Lowry would join the Los Angeles Kings as an assistant coach before jumping back to the WHL as head coach of the Brandon Wheat Kings. He was then hired as an assistant coach of the Winnipeg Jets in 2020, where he ended up His son coaching, Adam Lowry. He was then mentioned as the interim head coach of the jets after Paul Maurice was signed again.
What does Dave Lowry bring to the flames?
Lowry brings a wealth of experience at both the NHL and the WHL levels. Although he does not have many trophies to his name, he understands the game at a very high level and understands how the game works and the internal functioning of the Flames organization. With a coaching staff, including Ryan Huska, Cail McLean and Trent Cull, the veteran Nhler should bring a lot of experience into the team.
