The Calgary Flames’ 2025-2026 season has gone from bad to worse after yet another loss last night. Dropping their sixth straight game, the Flames’ record now stands at 1-6 on the season. After seven games, that’s officially the worst start in franchise history since the team moved to Calgary in 1980. 45 years of Flames hockey, and this team is alone for the wrong reasons.
Still looking for their second win
A few days ago we looked at how the Flames had matched their worst start in franchise history with just two points in their first six games. At that point, they were tied for both the 1997-98 and 2015-16 seasons. That said, in both seasons the Flames ultimately won their seventh game of the season, jumping above the two-point mark.
This time, however, the Flames dropped their seventh game and are still only two points on the year after seven games played. No team in franchise history to date has achieved just two points after the first seven games of the season.
What went wrong?
So what led to the worst start in 45 years of Flames hockey? Well, first of all, the Flames have only scored 11 goals in seven games, which equates to an awful 1.57 goals per game per year. In four of their seven games they scored just one goal. They have not scored four goals in open play in any match this season.
Defensively, they have allowed 27 goals, which is the second-worst total in the league at the moment. In other words, the team can’t score and can’t keep the puck out of the net.
It won’t get any easier
Unfortunately for the Flames, they won’t be getting any breaks in their schedule anytime soon. Here is the team’s upcoming schedule:
- Home vs MTL (5–2)
- @WPG (5–1)
- Home vs. NYR (3–4–1)
- @TOR (3–2–1)
The Flames will face two of the best teams in the league in their next two games in Montreal and Winnipeg. Then they get a break with New York and Toronto, but neither team should be considered an easy matchup. There is a very realistic scenario where this team could get one win after their first eleven games and be 1-10 next week.
