Every NHL team has its part of great contracts, as well as terrible contracts. The Calgary Flames have an abundance of both in their team. They have signed contracts based on versions of one season and group pressure that have become bad for the franchise. However, they have also signed a few contracts that have an excellent value in the long term. Let’s take a deep dive in the worst and best contracts on the Flames schedule.
Worst contracts
1) Jonathan Huberdeau
The obvious contract to put number one is Vooruit Jonathan Huberdau. He was taken from the Florida Panthers in the famous trade that sent Matthew Tkachuk the other way. Huberdau came to Calgary with the chance to prove the Panthers incorrectly. Unfortunately, things were terrible in the first two seasons of Huberdeau in Calgary. In the meantime, Tkachuk has won back-to-back Stanley Cups with Florida and was recently The cover -athlete of NHL 26.
Huberdeau signed a maximum term contract worth $ 84.00 million for eight years. This contract has been a disappointment, because Huberkereau has not fulfilled its superstotential since leaving Florida. The deal of the deal without movement prevents the flames from acting, sending it to the AHL or cancel Huberdeau without his approval.
This, together with the cap hit, it makes an almost impossible contract for the flames to get out. On the other hand, Huberdeau had a great season last year, where he scored 34 goals and 62 points.
2) Yegor Sharangovich
The second worst contract on the flames is part of Yegor Sharangovich. This is extremely disturbing because he had a fantastic first season as a flame. The attacker born in Belarus set 31 goals and 59 points in his first season. After this early success with the Flames, managing director Craig Conroy Sharangovich has expanded with a five -year deal. The contract has a value of $ 28.75 million with a cap -hit of $ 5.75 million per season. This deal starts next season for the first year.
Sharangovich had a great start like a flame, although things quickly went downhill in his second season. He was injured at the end of the preseason, which ruted the start of his season. This gave him a setback that was difficult to recover. It felt like he was behind everyone. Sharangovich closed the season with 17 goals and 32 assists. If he can stay healthy, I think he is a strong choice as a candidate-back-back for the flames.
3) Blake Coleman
The next one on the list is veteran Vooruit Blake Coleman. The double Stanley Cup champion comes from a season. He placed 39 points in 2024–25 after placing 30 goals in the 2023–24 season. Coleman could be a trade candidate for the Flames in the future, because he has only been left for his deal for two years. He has a cap of $ 4.90 million a year with an approved trading list of 10 teams.
Coleman is one of the older players who take away opportunities from younger players. Boys such as Martin Pospisil, Connor Zary and Rory Kerins may not get that much playing time with Coleman in their own way.
Coleman is another strong candidate to have a bounce back season. He still has the potential to score 20 goals in a season and will have consistent time on the third rule. Do you think the flames should consider moving Coleman? Or will he finish his contract as a flame?
4) Joel Farabee
The fourth-most strict contract on the flames is by Joel Farabee from Forward. Craig Conroy acquired him and Morgan Frost from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier and a few trekking choices.
Farabee had some strong seasons with the flyers and showed a serious promise. He got a new start with the flames. In general, he struggled powerfully after the move and recorded six points in 31 games. Next season, Farabee expects a strong chance in the Midden-Six to have a bounce back season.
Farabee has a cap -hit of $ 5.00 million per season. He was signed by the 2027–28 season, without contract restrictions. This means that the flames can try to trade it if things never turn around. The current value of his deal is not worth its production on the ice. Farabee should hit the 50-60 point brand to make his contract worthwhile. Do you think he can turn things around?
Best contracts
1) Mackenzie Weegar
The best contract on the Flames selection is from defender Mackenzie Weegar. He has been phenomenal during his time with the flames. There is an excellent chance that Weegar can make a push for a schedule at the Canadian Olympic hockey team of 2026. He really deserved a chance to play in the 4 Nations Tournament, but Thomas Harley was picked over him.
Weegar has had its best attacking years as a flame. In the 2023–24 season he placed a campaign of 20 goals together with a career high 52 points. Last season he registered a career height of 39 assists and 223 hits. The 31-year-old has been a beast on the blue line of the Flames and earns more credit.
After he was traded to Calgary, Weegar signed a maximum term contract worth $ 50.00 million for eight years. His hit of $ 6.25 million per season is an excellent deal for the Flames. If you get players such as Noah Dobson and Evan Bouchard more than $ 9.00 million per season, Weegar’s contract looks like one of the best in the competition. Signing this contract was the last good moment of Brad Treliving as general director of the Flames.
2) Mattone Rail
The recent contract extension Matt Coronato has signed this season, was perhaps a perfect deal. He comes from a fantastic season and was rewarded with a valuable contract. Believe it or not, Coronato started in the AHL last season. After a fast two-game stint with the Calgary Wranglers, Coronato joined the flames and became an impactful player. He scored 24 goals and 47 points in 77 games.
The young 22-year-old is ready for a Breakout season next year. Coronato should become consistent next to Nazem Kadri.
Coronato signed an extension of seven years with the flames worth $ 45.50 million. His cap hit of $ 6.50 million per season offers excellent value for a potential goal scorer of 30-40 goals. I think Coronato can reach 30 goals next season. Later on the road he might be a scorer of 40 goals if he continues to work on his rapid release. His shot only gets better as he gets older.
3) Nazem Kadri
This is perhaps a bit of a hot take, but I believe that Nazem Kadri has already realized his contract. Kadri has been a real leader with the flames, with which many people are wrong. Many fans expected him to fall shortly after drawing with the flames; However, he had some of his best seasons in Calgary.
In the past two years, Kadri has led the flames in points. He set a career of 35 goals last season and almost helped the team to drag to the play -offs. His experienced presence has been excellent for the younger boys – especially since Huberdeau has struggled so much.
Kadri will be 35 at the start of next season. He has left on his contract for another four years, with a cap hit of $ 7.00 million a year. This will eventually become a bit of a rough contract, because it is likely that Kadri will fall off by the time he is 38.
The good news is that Kadri’s contract only contains a no-trade list with 13 teams after next season. If the flames have to move it in the future, a deal can certainly be closed. I think the flames should keep him for the time being, because they will probably not get much commercial value in a 35-year-old attacker.
4) Martin Postovil
This can also be a hot take, but the recent signed extension Martin Pospisil was great in value. You could claim that Dustin Wolf belongs in the top four, but I decided to omit it because he has not signed a large NHL contract. Pospisil comes from a difficult season. The Slovak attacker only scored four goals in 81 games. This reduced the confidence he had in his game.
Although he didn’t score much, Pospisil can be an extremely useful player. He touches a ton and brings some speed to the line -up. The 25-year-old is not afraid to get into the face of the other team, something that the flames miss a bit. That is one of the reasons why he is on this list.
Pospisil drew a nice three -year extension with the flames at the end of July. This deal will only start in the 2026–27 season, because it will last a year to $ 1.00 million. As soon as the deal starts, Pospisil has a cap of $ 2.50 million in those three seasons. This is a great price, because Pospisil can be an effective depth that drives the piece.
His performance next to Connor Zary and Nazem Kadri in the past was great. He only has to bring back the game that he brought when he first came to the flames. Do you think Pospisil can bounce back next year?
