Coaches around the NFL will tell you that training camp is time for mistakes, but Caleb Williams really stretched that adage in the weekend. Two videos from Williams went viral, because the second -year QB had a number of absolutely terrible steps.
The first came during an exercise in which the QBs of the bears worked against a throwing net in a target exercise. Williams somehow managed to miss any goal of 10 meters away and miss it all together during his last pass.
Williams was noticeably irritated by himself, and understandable. This is not exactly the kind of things that make fans feel confidence in a QB where they bank their entire future, in a year in which Chicago is expected to make a big leap in the NFC North with an improved offensive line.
No matter how bad this clip was, it went worse at Fan Night when Williams forcibly clambed before he saved a duck that was easily chosen.
In total, Williams hit 5-out-17 with three interceptions in his representatives for fans. Hardly the kind of outing we hoped to see. Now there are two ways to view this, and neither is particularly incorrect:
- This is training camp, where play are installed and things are designed to look rough
- This is a very bad look for Caleb Williams
The greatest risk when hiring Ben Johnson is that, although he is a brilliant coach, he was a structure -based coordinator who now had to work with Williams, a QB that thrives out of the structure and improvising of broken plays. It was a bit of a strange fit from the beginning, and the care will be that the two simply do not mesh as head coach and franchise QB.
So it’s okay to worry about such clips, while it is also recognized that training camp was made to look bad – and it’s great to struggle.
