BYD Sealion 8 launched in China, Brazil – PHEV and EV versions available; Australia soon, Malaysia when? – paultan.org

Unveiled at Auto Guangzhou 2025, the upgraded BYD Tang L (known globally as the Atto 8 or Sealion 8; we’ll call it the latter in this story) has been launched in China and Brazil. Citing various sources, AutoNewsChina reports that in China there are six variants, for both PHEV and EV, with prices between 215,000 and 275,000 yuan (RM125,000 – 160,000), while Brazil only offers the PHEV for 400,000 real (RM310,000).

Let’s first talk about the DM‑p PHEV – it combines a 1.5-litre 156 hp turbo petrol engine with a 35,624 kWh battery and one or two electric motors (i.e. 2WD or AWD), each capable of delivering up to 272 hp. 0-100 km/h can be done in just 4.3 seconds and the CLTC EV-only range, er, range between 175 and 215 km (150 km noted for Brazil).

On to the emission-free versions. Buyers in China can have one or two engines – the first uses a 680bhp engine for 0-62mph in 4.3 seconds; the latter has a 313 hp engine at the front and a 789 hp engine at the rear, good for a sprint time of 3.9 seconds. In any case, the battery is a 100,531 kWh LFP unit, giving a CLTC range of between 560 and 670 km. 1,000 kW DC charging is possible, allowing a distance of 370 km to be covered in five minutes.

In China, the seven-seater SUV has a roof-mounted LiDAR with God’s Eye DiPilot 300 ADAS (allowing parking and egress without being in the car) and DiLink 150 for infotainment. However, Brazil will not get the LiDAR, and according to Driving forceNeither does Australia.

Australia? Yes, the big BYD is confirmed for that market, so we’d better look to a right-hand drive country for more accurate speculation. Australia, like Brazil, will only get the PHEV for the time being. There will be FWD and AWD versions – the former uses a 150 hp/220 Nm 1.5T, a 19 kWh battery and a 272 hp/315 Nm front electric motor (0-100 km/h in 8.6 seconds, 103 km NEDC); the latter comes with a 272 hp/350 Nm rear motor and a 35.6 kWh battery (0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, 152 km NEDC).

Other figures include a length of 5,040 mm, a width of 1,996 mm, a height of 1,760 mm, a wheelbase of 2,950 mm (bigger than the new Hyundai Santa Fe in every respect except height and even then only by a few centimeters) and a luggage compartment of 270 liters (fold the third row of seats for 960 liters, fold the second row also for 1,960 liters).
