Okay, so this isn’t it new new, launched in China last July and in Britain in November, but we don’t believe we’ve featured the BYD Seal 6 DM-i Touring on these pages before. Plus, it’s always good to know that the station wagon isn’t dead and that even a giant like BYD is willing to give it a try.

This isn’t exactly a long-roof version of the Seal 6 on sale in Malaysia – our Seal 6 is actually a Qin L from the Dynasty series, while the car you see here is based on the Seal 06 from the Ocean series, although the two are kind of sister models.

First things first: the Touring’s boot can take up 675 liters up to the roof, and if you fold the rear seats down that becomes 1,535 litres. Length, width, height and wheelbase are 4,850, 1,890, 1,505 and 2,790 mm respectively, making it 20 mm longer, 15 mm wider and 10 mm taller than the Seal 06 sedan.

DM-i means plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in the world of BYD, and this load logger combines a 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine with 97 hp/126 Nm with an electric motor to drive the front wheels. In the UK, the £35,000 (RM191k) Boost variant has a 184PS motor (0-100km/h in 8.9 seconds) and a 10kWh battery (55km EV range only) that can only charge 3.3kW AC (DC not supported).

Instead, pay £358,000 (RM207,000) for the top Comfort variant, and you get a 194bhp engine (0-100km/h in 8.5 seconds) and a 19kWh battery (105km electric-only range). Only this variant accepts DC charging (max. 26 kW); As for AC, it requires 6.6 kW – twice as much as the Boost variant. BYD claims a combined WLTP range of 1,350 km and fuel consumption of just 1.7 liters per 100 km.

The base Boost variant gets 17-inch alloy wheels, adaptive cruise control, a 360 camera, a 12.8-inch touchscreen, three ISOFIX points and a hands-free power tailgate, while the Comfort gets 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof and a 15.6-inch touchscreen.
