Yesterday, Thursday…was a very long one. It started at 8am with a warm-up with Anna Zimmermann, as always this week (thanks Anna!). Bunnie Jackson played Pat Purcell and eventually won 67 64 61 in three hours on a sunny, warm day. I played Una Davis and the score, 60 62 for me, mainly belied the closeness of the second set… we had two games, when I was 4/1 up, that were seemingly interminable… Una won the first when I served and I rallied from 0-40 to win the 4/2 game. It was a 1:40 match (including the short warm-up).
Much later, around 3pm, Bunnie and I played and won a 2.5 hour doubles match against Betsy Savitt/Purcell to win the golden balls. It was very windy…tough conditions. We won 63 46 64 and finished just before sunset.
In the 1960s, Vicki Buholz won the singles against Jenny Rens, 64 ret, but the two finalists teamed up in the doubles, beating Sylvia Kodsi/Ellen Markowitz, 61 76(8). The second set contained too many fantastic points to count, with Buholz and Rens stifling the net. Markowitz took bronze over Anna Zimmermann in the singles, while Kaleel/Charlton took the bronze in the doubles.

Sue Kimball defeated her doubles partner Betty Wachob in straight sets to win the 80 singles. Kimball/Wachob then defeated Brenda Carter/Sharon Greene to win the doubles gold (on Friday). Brenda Winstead/Carolann Castell won the bronze in the doubles against Carol Clay/Ellen Goodman. Carter took bronze in the singles.
I won Bunnie Jackson’s 70 singles yesterday. The weather went from temperatures around freezing (including wind chill), which necessitated a later start on Monday and Tuesday, to warm and humid yesterday. Our match lasted almost 2.5 hours and I won 63 76 (4). The wind was blowing very hard and the second set was long and tough. Pat Purcell took bronze by default over Una Davis and Leslie Murveit defeated Tina Karwasky 10-8 in a tiebreak (after losing the first set 60) and Kathy Foulk finished fifth. This was a tough draw!

Many thanks to Trish Faulkner and her crew and the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis Center for their hospitality.
Next stop: Turkey, for the ITF Masters World Team Championships (at Manavgat), but first rest and pack.
