After beating Merrimack two weeks ago, BU took ā€œa huge step backwardsā€ in a 6-2 loss to Quinnipiac.

“There will be bumps in the road. But we can’t take steps backwards and we saw that on Saturday,” said Head Coach Jay Parolfo said during Thursday’s media call.

ā€œWe have to start taking steps forward, even if they are small steps, whatever they may be,ā€ he added. ā€œThat’s what we need to see from this team.ā€

In light of this, Pandolfo explained, “We’ve changed our approach a little bit with the way we practice. We’ve played 12 games, so for me it’s a little frustrating that we have to keep doing that. Everyone talks about how young we are. But that’s just an excuse in my opinion.”

He also revealed that the team will be without sophomores Sacha Boisvert and freshmen Conrad Fondrkboth of whom are dealing with minor injuries that he called ā€œongoing.ā€

In addressing the defensive issues that have resulted in the team’s 4.00 goals against average, Pandolfo pointed to “Winning puck battles in the defensive zone. We’ve been very bad at blocking shots. We haven’t been very good at diverting people away from our net and we’ve left our spot open far too often.”

Defense pairs have been changed with Mick Frechette participate Gavin McCarty, Aiden Celebrini of Cole Hutson And Carter friend of Sascha Boumedienne.

Pandolfo also mentioned a personal connection to Northeastern. His maternal grandfather, John R. Byrneplayed for the Huskies in the 1930s, captained the team from 1938-1939 and was later named to the school’s Varsity Club Hall of Fame.

Despite losing twice to UConn last weekend (2-4, 3-4 OT), Northeastern has been steadily rising in the polls and boasts a win over BC and wins over Denver and UMass.

Junior Dyland Hryckowian and freshman Jacob Mathieu are tied for the team points lead with 11. Freshman Giacomo Martino is the top scorer with six, one ahead of Hryckowian. On defense, senior Vinny Borgesi, who is among the best in Division 1, graduate student Joaquim Lemay and senior Austin May lead an experienced unit.

In goal, Lawton Zacher, a transfer from Brown, brings excellent numbers: 1.80 GAA and .943 save percentage. He was named National Goalkeeper of the Month for October.
