Bryan Mbeumo has proven to be worth his weight in gold since joining Manchester United from Brentford before the start of this season. The Red Devils have spent £71 million to secure the Cameroonian’s signature and the club’s recruitment team will be patting themselves on the back after his stunning start at Old Trafford.
The Premier League giants were looking for new faces after making major changes to their attack following a dismal 24/25 season. Goal-scoring was United’s biggest problem last season under former manager Erik ten Hag, and even the arrival of former head coach Ruben Amorim did little to improve the team’s performance in the final third.
The Red Devils were not decisive enough in attack, which resulted in a return of only 44 goals in 38 league games last season. No wonder they finished fifteenth in the Premier League and also lost the Europa League final 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur.
INEOS moved efficiently over the summer to overhaul the attack, removing the likes of Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho. Subs were Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers and Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, alongside Mbeumo and Senne Lammens, with the latter brought on to tackle the goalkeeping position.
United have subsequently improved their performances in front of goal, scoring 48 times in 27 league games. All four summer signings have played key roles so far, but it’s fair to say that the Cameroonian has been the standout performer.
Mbeumo’s season so far
Mbeumo made his debut for United in the first game of the season against Arsenal, with fellow summer signing Cunha also selected from the start. Building on their new signings, the Red Devils took a closer look at Mikel Arteta’s well-drilled side, who narrowly missed out on winning the Premier League title last season.
The Cameroonian was primarily a threat, regularly stretching the opposition’s backline, and the Gunners had to rely on their regular routine to come away with a narrow 1-0 win. Despite the defeat, Mbeumo’s start filled fans with optimism, and he has been a revelation so far.
The Cameroonian has scored ten goals and three assists in 23 appearances in all competitions, all but one of which were starts. The 26-year-old is also United’s top scorer this season, further underlining his importance to the team.

Mbeumo was also decisive in the 1-0 win over Everton on Monday, February 23, setting up Sesko to score the winner. While the Cameroonian limped off in the 77th minute and was replaced by Noussair Mazraoui, fans were relieved to see him resume normal training this week. The player has now received praise from former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch.
Crouch’s signing of the season
Crouch was recently asked to name his pre-season signing at TNT Sports, and the former England international chose Mbeumo. He said: “I think Mbeumo is for me (Premier League signing of the season). He has changed the dynamic of Manchester United. He is a finisher and he is quick. He has certainly brought a lot to United this season.”
Fellow pundit and former Chelsea player Joe Cole chose Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma as his pick. Fans will point out that Mbeumo scored in the 2-0 win over City at Old Trafford in caretaker manager Michael Carrick’s first game.
Final thoughts
Mbeumo will get the chance to add to his list of achievements on Sunday, March 1, when United take on Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are fourth in the Premier League after 27 games, but can climb to third place if they manage to get all three points. Fans will hope that the Cameroonian, who has provided three goals and two assists in six games under Carrick, can be decisive again this weekend.
