Roberto Martinez’s men ran riot at Porto’s Estádio do Dragão, with Manchester United midfielder Fernandes and Paris Saint-Germain star Joao Neves central to the treble success.
Portugal opened the scoring inside seven minutes through Renato Veiga, although Eduard Spertsyan’s equalizer in the 18th minute restored parity.
However, the home team came back emphatically and scored freely, despite the absence of the suspended talisman Cristiano Ronaldo. Goncalo Ramos restored Portugal’s lead before a quick double from Neves put the Portuguese firmly in control.
Fernandes’ first of the afternoon, from the penalty spot, made it 5-1 at half-time. Portugal refused to give up after the break as Fernandes and Neves each claimed hat-tricks. Fernandes’ treble ended a barren run for the national team after not scoring for a year and a day prior to his hat-trick against Armenia.
Francisco Conceição’s injury-time strike made it nine for Portugal, who qualified for the World Cup as winners of Group F.
