Whether it was Tuesday’s fiery feud with Boone Jenner or the general interest surrounding defenseman Rasmus Andersson, trade talks are heating up. The Calgary Flames are reportedly aiming to get a deal done before the NHL’s Olympic break from February 6 to 25. A team that likes tough guys and good defenders is the Boston Bruins.
Multiple NHL sources and Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman confirm discussions have intensified, with several contenders actively involved. According to James Murphy of RG.org“The Bruins have made an offer that includes defenseman Mason Lohrei and a first-round pick, with Boston having two firsts in the 2026 draft thanks to the Brandon Carlo trade.”
Three Atlantic Division teams are leading the charge: Boston, Detroit and Ottawa. If Boston makes a serious pitch, they could be the frontrunners. The Bruins are well-positioned, have two first-round selections in the 2026 draft and if they believe Andersson is open to an extension, they appear ready to make a move.
Aren’t the other teams as serious as Boston?
Reports indicate that Detroit’s interest comes with strings attached. The Red Wings will only move on if Andersson agrees to a contract extension, and top young defenders Simon Edvinsson and Axel Sandin Pellikka are considered untouchable.
For Ottawa, they remain focused on adding a legitimate top-four right-shooting defenseman to stabilize the blueline, with Andersson filling that need. They too may have a few untouchables in terms of young prospects.
Outside of the Atlantic, the Vegas Golden Knights, Anaheim Ducks and Dallas Stars have also shown interest.
Friedman noted that while talks surrounding Andersson have stalled before, this stretch feels different, with Calgary being more aggressive than usual.
Andersson, 29, is in the final year of his six-year deal and has a cap hit of $4.5 million, making him one of the most intriguing defensemen on the trade market.
