Brooks Koepka leaves LIV Golf.
The league announced the split on Tuesday, saying in a statement that they had “amicably and mutually agreed” that Koepka would no longer compete at LIV, sending shockwaves through the professional golf world.
LIV’s announcement highlighted Koepka’s desire to spend more time with his family given the demands of the global schedule.
“Brooks is prioritizing the needs of his family and staying closer to home,” it said, adding: “Achieving our mission requires an exceptional commitment to rigorous global travel, increased engagement with media, partners and fans and a commitment to mentoring the next generation of stars.”
The subtext seemed clear: Koepka does not want or cannot be part of that mission in the future.
Koepka did not comment independently, but LIV’s announcement included a statement from Koepka’s representatives, thanking LIV Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and LIV CEO Scott O’Neil and adding that he “wishes the league and its players continued success.”
The departure is unprecedented in LIV’s four-year history. Players have come and gone from the league, but none have approached Koepka’s stature. The move is especially interesting because Koepka was under contract with LIV until 2026.
Koepka had captained LIV franchise Smash GC; that cloak passes now to his teammate Talor Gooch.
The PGA Tour’s cryptic answer
The PGA Tour released a statement just minutes after LIV’s announcement went live, though the statement raised as many questions as answers.
“Brooks Koepka is a very talented professional and we wish him and his family the best of luck,” the statement said. “The PGA Tour continues to provide the best professional golfers with the most competitive, challenging and lucrative environment in which to pursue greatness.”
Yet it made one thing clear: the Tour is paying close attention.
Koepka’s uncertain future
So – what now?
Koepka’s statement was vague about his future, although you can read this line from his team all you want: “Brooks remains passionate about the game of golf and will keep fans informed of what lies ahead.”
Could Koepka return to the PGA Tour? That’s the multi-million dollar question. GOLF has learned that Koepka’s representatives informed the Tour of his decision in advance, although they have not had any formal discussions about a possible return.
An interesting wrinkle in Koepka’s case is that he has not renewed his PGA Tour membership beyond the 2022 season. So if he wanted to participate in the Tour again, he would have to formally register again – and then they would decide on possible sanctions.
PGA Tour professionals who leave for LIV will face suspensions, although the length of those suspensions is uncertain and may vary by player. A few contributing factors in Koepka’s case:
-The Tour has suspended players competing in “unauthorized” LIV events, with non-members receiving a one-year ban from their last LIV event
-Although he was a member of the PGA Tour when he signed with LIV in 2022, he did not renew membership for the 2023 season
-He was not part of the group of LIV players who sued the PGA Tour
-He won the PGA Championship in 2023, which means he is exempt from the Masters, the Open Championship and the US Open through 2028, plus the PGA Championship for life.
It is difficult to imagine Koepka waltzing back into the Tour without sanctions. But from the immediate reaction it also seems clear that the Tour wants him back. Considering his five major championships and star power, it’s easy to see why. These are uncharted waters; it’s safe to assume the Tour will do everything it can to get Koepka back into eligibility as soon as possible.
The DP World Tour option
If Koepka’s recent competitive history is any indication, his path back into golf’s “establishment” could include the DP World Tour. Koepka, who began his pro career abroad, played four DPWT events following the conclusion of the 2025 LIV season. These four starts were highlighted by a fourth-place finish at the FedEx French Open.
The DP World Tour route could be a little easier in the short term; he could play a limited schedule of his choosing in 2026, serve a one-year ban (the type handed out to non-members thus far) and return to the PGA Tour late next year.
