Extended to 1-4 in his last five, Ortega not only forced his opponent, Aljamain Sterling, to compete in a higher weight class, but in a recent post the UFC medical team exposed in a worrying way.

Take to InstagramOrtega has tackled its weight -saving problems in Shanghai. He explained:
“I hit the bike for 20 minutes. When I got out, I went unconscious. I was about 30 minutes unconscious. During that time they put ice on me, they took out all my clothes, they left me in boxers. I woke up in the there, I tore everything off, I couldn’t really speak, translate to them. I had something like that, if they don’t take everything out, I will take it myself. We knew that we had time limit to get to the weightings, otherwise I couldn’t fight.
If you saw the weightings, you clearly know that I looked insane and just came in the tunnel for 30 minutes ”.

Health in the hands of Brian Ortega – Not the UFC
It seems that the decision was in the hands of De Jager, Brian Ortega. We know that hunters have an elite mindset and will always look to fight if they can. The UFC medical team must be those who make the decision. Ortega stated:
“We thought that if I didn’t feel good or that something was seriously finished, we would call the fight.”
This emphasizes an important problem with pre-Vecht medicalities. The choice should never be in the hands of De Jager, the Jager team or the promoter. It should be the decision of the independent medical team. If a hunter was unconscious the day before a fight, the logic has to prevail and that hunter must be pulled out of the fight.
Medical failures in Shanghai
Brian Ortega’s problem was not the only failure of the night from a medical perspective. Kiefer Crosbie suffered from a brutal illegal knee, which demonstrably led to a TKO loss by Nuerriji Taiyilake.
The Irishman went to Instagram to say that no doctor had checked him after the fight. He further explained:
This is a clear error in the medical tests and is concerned with all hunters who want to fight in China soon. Hopefully in the future, better, more in-depth medical tests and procedures will be introduced before UFC fights in the region and better take care of the hunters after the fighting will also come to light.
