The Brewers came in tonight’s game with a winning streak of nine games and wanted to push it in double digits for the second time this season. They made sure it would happen because the attack still had a strong day, almost from start to finish.
Jose Quintana got the start for the Brewers and eliminated the Pirates to the first inning. A few balls were worrying when they were deeply touched, but stayed in the margin. As far as the Brewers is concerned, it only took five pitches to take the lead. Brice Turang went deep in the middle of his 11th home run of the season, and the Brewers had a 1-0 lead.
The brewers threatened to make a much bigger lead. After Isaac Collins came out and William Contreras stuck, Christian Yelich hit a two-out single to the middle. Andrew Vaughn followed that with a walk, and then Caleb Durbin was hit by a throw to load the bases. Sal Frelick got the chance to drive in a few points, but went out to leave them loaded.
Quintana worked a short inning in the second, with the pirates withdrawing in order of the second straight inning. He still allowed a few long outs, but they were no problem. The Bewers were also usually quiet in the bottom of the inning. Turang took a two-out walk, but that was it.
The third inning was one that was not characteristic of the Brewers. It started with a solo -at -home run by Joey Bart. Quintana had some long fly outs for this at bat, but it left the park. Jared Triolo succeeded that by hit a single to the left field, and Isaac Collins bobed the handle, allowing Triolo to become second. It broke an 11-game clear stripe for the brewers. Quintana added a second error for a good measure and threw a pickoff attempt past Turang – which was entangled in maneuvering around Triolo – and in midfield. Quintana recovered from there, took Peguero out and received a fly from Tommy Pham to start the runner in third place.
The Tie game lasted no more than two batters to the bottom of the third. After Contreras had set up to start the collection, Yelich hit the first throw he saw to the right-hand center for a 2-1 lead.
On the next pitch, Vaughn hit a bouncing ball to Nick Gonzales, and the pitch was slow enough that the Vaughn hit it for an Infield Single. Durbin bumped into the next throw, Isiah Kiner-Falefa threw Durbin away but Advanced Vaughn to the second. On the next pitch (again), Frelick hit a single to the right. Vaughn was abandoned from home and hit the pitch and gave the Brewers a 3-1 lead. Frelick also reached second on the pitch to the plate. In a series of four fields, the brewers went from a 1-1 draw to a 3-1 lead. Subsequently, Brandon Lockridge was not that efficiently he needed three throws in his batott, but the results were another RBI single with Frelick score to get a 4-1 lead.
The Brewers continued the pressure, with Joey Ortiz hit a bloop and single in the right field to move Lockridge to the third. With Turang on the plate, Ortiz went for a stalk of second. Bart’s throw was low and bounced off the glove of Triolo, allowing Lockridge to score and it led to 5-1. Turang smashed to end the inning, but the Bewers had built a big lead.
Quintana recovered from his rough third inning in the fourth. He ran on McCutchen to give the Pirates a two-out baseunners, but that was all and he had a calm inning. However, the brewers continued the pressure. Collins distracted the inning with a double along the left field line that just remained reasonable. Contreras followed that with a single in the middle, but had to hold on Collins and ensure that the ball fell, so he only reached third place. Yelich was the next and hit a bouncing ball hard, but immediately back to Heaney. A quick throw to the second received Contreras, but Triolo threw third place to try to get Collins from the base. Collins got back safely, so that the Pirates only removed one instead of a doubles.
That would be important for Andrew Vaughn. Instead of going for the power hit, Vaughn went for the Squeeze Bunt. It worked perfectly when Vaughn sent it to the first Hungklinie. Peguero threw Heaney who tagged Vaughn for the out, but Collins was in contact and scored easily. The lead of the Brewers increased a bit more and they now had a 6-1 lead.
They had another chance to score with Yelich in second place and Durbin took his second hit at the pitch of the day. Frelick, however, flew out to end the collection.
After a few action -packed innings, the fifth was a much quieter one for both parties. Each line -up went down in order, although the Pirates Heaney got to start the bottom of the fifth. Heaney had allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks, and threw only three batters. Chase Shugart was relieved for the fifth and switched the Bewers in order.
Quintana stayed in for the sixth inning. He started with a groundout for Peguero, but on the piece he seemed to be a bit awkward on his right leg while he played the ball. The athletic staff spoke with him and he stayed in the game. At the next pitch, Pham hit a ball to deep right in the middle, but Lockridge made a running hold in the outfield wall for the out. Reynolds hit a two-out double to place a runner in a score position. Gonzales ended the inning with a ground ball along the first basement. Quintana tried to grab it and tag gonzales, but the ball came out of his glove. While Gonzales, however, avoided the tag, it took him away from the base and rolled the ball near Vaughn. He took it and first touched it to get it out and end the inning.
That would be the end of Quintana’s day by 89 throws. He gave the Bewers a start of six inning and was only one point-the Thuis Run in the third inning. He limited the pirates to three hits and a walk, and threw three in the outing.
As for the Brewers, they kept the barrage on the attack. Collins distracted the bottom of the sixth with a triple along the right field line, just below the glove of Peguero in the beginning and slowly enough to have Collins reach the third. Reynolds threw in to try to get Collins in third place, but the relay throw of Gonzales was missed and Collins was safe. Contreras made that triple count with a single to the right, and it was a 7-1 match. The rest of the inning went quietly when Yelich aimed for a doubles and Vaughn turned out.
Grant Anderson came in from the Bullpen to take the seventh inning. He allowed a one-out walk to Jack Suwinski, but that would be erased on a double play. Joey Bart stood right in front of the plate, Contreras grabbed him quickly and threw Turang in second place for the out, then to Vaughn to complete the double game. In the second half of the inning, Shugart De Brouwers went down to put a rapid operation of work.
The eighth inning passed quietly for both parties. Anderson switched on the pirates with the help of contreras. On a dirty pop-up from Kiner-Falefa, contreras chased it to the dugout of the Brewers and almost came in when he made the catch. Kyle Nicholas threw the eighth for the Pirates and he also had a 1-2-3 inning to close the inning.
Shelby Miller made his second performance as a brewer in the ninth inning. Pham flew to the first from the inning – all his outs were deep fly outs or line -outs that stayed in the park. He succeeded that with a strike from Reynolds. Gonzales ended the game with a First-Pitch Groundout. Miller Field it and threw Vaughn for the out, and the Bewers had won 10 in a row. They are the first team since the Astros 2019 with several 10-game winning streaks in the same season.
It was again a balanced day for the attack of the Brewers. Each starter except one has recorded at least one hit. Collins, contreras and Yelich all had two hit days. The only batter that did not take a hit was Caleb Durbin – who still reached two hbps and had a sacrificial thrust in a different appearance. Those two hbps brought him to 17 for the season. It was a combination of strength and small ball in this. They had two solo-home runs, but also made their scoring options counting with a four-like day with runners in a score position.
The Bewers will be in a row tomorrow night for their 11th victory, which should be a selection framework. Freddy Peralta gets the start for the Brewers, because he got an extra day of rest. On the other hand, Paul Skenes will start for the Pirates. The first pitch is planned at 6:40 PM CT, and it will be on Fanduel Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network.
