The well -to -do coach Brent Larkham has become the 15th Inductee in the Walk of Fame of the Tennis Act.

Brent Larkham has become the 15th person who is included in the Walk of Fame of the Tennis Act.

The name Larkham had already left a mark on the Canberra sports landscape before Brent announced itself, via Bruce and Stephanie in Tennis, and Bruce’s brother Geoff in Rugby Union. Brent, younger brother, Todd and Neef Stephen, were each destined to further add their own successes to the Larkham Sporting Dynasty.

Larkham was first raised in Higgins, where the tennis court of their family was used by Bruce for tennis coaching. In 1978 the family moved to Hawker, in the course of time to a very successful tennis complex of 12-Court. The complex because a full -time company with coaching, tournaments and court rental; The perfect environment to develop Brent’s sporty pedigree.

At the age of eight, Larkham won the ACT 11/h Resident Singles, followed by the 10/h Junior Open Doubles. In the 1980s, Larkham represented the act in the Bruce and Pizzey Cups and won different age titles.

By 1989, while he was still a junior, Larkham was the top of the top, after he had won the 18/U title of Act Resident Boys two years in a row. In the Linton Cup, Larkham dropped only one competition and lost closely to Junior World No. 1, Grant Doyle.

Larkham moved to the adult ranks, won his first Doubles title at the challenger level in 1992 and the following year, doubles and Singles titles. At Queen’s Club he defeated the world NR. 60 Patrick Mcenroe before he lost to Stefan Edberg.

Larkham received a wildcard in his first Grand Slam on Australian Open 1994 and started a crucial year for the Canberran. He defeated World No.27, Amos Mansdorf, to reach the third round, bend in a tough five-setter to Czech Martin Damm.

Larkham’s game had grown up, aimed at a huge forehand, combined with a powerful Serve, court speed and tactical consciousness.

During his career, Larkham won the Finnish open, while he also collected solid results in Newcastle, Bogota, Wolfsburg and Bristol. His career-high rankings were world no. 108 in Singles and World No.128 in Doubles-Vandaag still the third highest rankings for a male player of the act.

With a record seven ACT players in 1994 who represent Australia internationally-all current or future top-200 ranked players-werd Larkham rated on the 1994 Act Male Player of the Year.

Unfortunately, Larkham tore two drives in his back at the end of 1994, which eventually retired from the professional circuit at the age of 25.

Postcarier, Larkham turned to coaching, initially guided Wayne Arthurs and Broer, Todd, both tried to get it on the world stage. Larkham became a base near Wimbledon and became a central point for Australian players after the juniors.

In addition to Arthurs and Todd, Paul Hanley, Alun Jones, Ben Ellwood, Richard Fromberg and Andrew Kratzmann all achieved career-best results under the guardianship of Larkham.

“Brent was the greatest influence on my career, completely changed my game style and was the only reason why I could turn my tennis around,” said Arthurs. “From a low 1500 world ranking, within two years, I entered the top 50, won an ATP title and competed with the best in the world.”

Larkham’s success saw him from 2006 to 2012 appointed head coach of the AIS Pro Tour program in Canberra. Success stories are Peter Luczak, Chris Guccione, Casey Dellacqua, Sam Groth, Jarmila Gajdosova and Nick Kyrgios.

Larkham is currently the head coach of the Tennis Australia National Academy in Brisbane, mentor stars such as Kimberly Birrell, Olivia Gadecki and, most recently, Maya Joint.

“Brent’s track record when developing and switching from athletes to the Pro Tour is unparalleled,” said Craig Tiley, CEO of Tennis Australia. “He is respected worldwide for his tennis insight and leadership, as well as his technical knowledge and ability.”
