Today we are talking about breastfeeding; a topic that I know will be supportive to many of you. What I like about this talk is that my guest provides practical, accessible guidance and helps explain how the mechanisms of breastfeeding actually work. Whether you’re preparing, navigating, or just want to better understand the process, this episode is here to support you. Let’s dive in.
In this episode of Yoga| Birth | Babies I am accompanied by Dr. Leigh Campbell, MD, IBCLC. Dr. Campbell is among the first cohort of board-certified physicians in breastfeeding and lactation medicine and is also a board-certified neonatologist and pediatrician.
In this episode you will learn about:
- About Dr. Campbell and what led her to medication and breastfeeding
- How Breastfeeding Medicine works with lactation consultants, and when a family can benefit from that extra layer of support
- What Dr. Campbell wants parents to know who worry that something is “wrong” if breastfeeding hurts or doesn’t work right away
- How babies actually get milk from the breast, and why latch and positioning are so important
- How breastfeeding differs from bottle feeding, and what that means for the way we help babies learn to feed comfortably
- Why so many parents are told their baby may need a procedure, and what families should consider before choosing that route
- The first things to optimize before talking about surgery, if weight gain is slow or feeding is painful
- What has changed in the way we understand and treat mastitis, and what actually helps in those early stages
- What Dr. Campbell wants parents to know about the first two weeks after birth in terms of milk production
- Structural barriers Dr. Campbell sees how they mainly hinder early milk production, and how healthcare systems can do better
- For parents feeling overwhelmed by all the advice, gadgets and opinions surrounding nutrition, a grounding message on how to tackle this journey
- To a parent who feels like feeding hasn’t gone as they hoped, but still wants to feel confident and supported: some encouraging words from Dr. Campbell
- One last tip or piece of advice she would like to give to new and expectant parents
- Where you can find her work

AboutDr. Campbell:
Leigh Campbell, MD, IBCLC, is among the first cohort of board-certified physicians in breastfeeding and lactation medicine and is also a board-certified neonatologist and pediatrician. She founded Mississippi’s first lactation medicine clinic at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in 2022 before transitioning to private practice, where she provides couple-centered, evidence-based care that integrates medical diagnostics with advanced breast milk and milk supply management. Dr. Campbell works at the Mississippi Perinatal Quality Collaborative (MSPQC), is a champion of the Mississippi AAP Breastfeeding Chapter and sits on the board of a regional breast milk bank. She leads a weekly local MS MILC League breastfeeding support group to expand access to trusted guidance. Her passion for this work is personal: she breastfed twins during her medical training, and the challenges she faced inspired her commitment to lactation medicine. Dedicated to caring for the whole person, she teaches yoga, especially prenatal yoga, in the studio next to her clinic and completed prenatal yoga teacher training through the Prenatal Yoga Center with Deb Flashenberg.
