The Toronto Maple Leafs are again in the middle of the trade speculation, and this time the proposed deal can immediately dissolve multiple grid needs. According to a scenario that was lying by Heavy, Toronto Buffalo Sabres Defender Bowen Byram could land in exchange for Brandon Carlo, Nick Robertson and Calle Jarnkrok.
At first glance, the deal feels like a blockbuster – but when you break it down, it makes sense for both sides.
Byram checks a critical box for the Leafs. At the age of just 24, the former fourth pick, the type of skilled, Puck-moving defender Toronto is said to be looking. Not necessarily satisfied to enter this season with only Morgan Rielly and an attacking gifted Blueliner, Byram comes from a season with 38 points and more than 22 minutes average ice age. This summer there was talk of where he fitted on a busy Sabres Blue Line, but the Leafs could immediately give him four minutes.
He would help their transitional game, get a chance of a big stage to show what he is capable of.
Buffalo, on the other hand, has the possibility to sacrifice a little offense from their back for a steady closure presence such as Carlo. He was able to swing on their top pairs next to Rasmus Dahlin. Together with Carlo, the Sabres would pick up a potential scorer of 20 goals in Nick Robertson and depth in Jarnkrok. The latter is a decent depth option, even if it has paid somewhat too much. Especially for Robertson, a move to Buffalo could offer the consistent chance he missed in Toronto, with the chance to finally break into a top-six role.
Byram to Toronto is an intriguing idea
Although there is no guarantee that this trade will take place, but all players involved in this prosed trade miss full trade protection in their contracts. The only one with a partial no-trade is Carlo, who can choose eight teams that he does not want to go. The Sabres may be on his list, but if not, the framework is logical.
Toronto gets the Puck-Moving defender where he goes to Humpert and Buffalo adds depth, experience and top. With NHL insider David Pagnotta who suggests that Byram can still be moved despite his new contract, and Pierre Lebrun from the Ahtletic who confirms that the Leafs are still active in trade discussions, this is a deal that both front offices would have to explore at least.
